Would the Royal baby name put you off one you had chosen?

Sorry if this has been done before but I wondered what the general feeling is about naming a child in the next 6-12 months with the same name as the impending Royal sprog.

I am expecting DC2 in December and if it's a boy we are really keen on George but someone this morning said that is odds on favourite for Wills and Kate's baby if it's a boy.

It's really put me off, but am I being an idiot?

I am guessing lots of Williams were born in the early 80s and I can't say I think 'Prince William' any time I meet a Will...

I agree that it's going to be something pretty bland so it shouldn't put you off any more than using any of the other common middle class names around - if that had been your intention!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 26/06/2013 09:08

Yes it definitely would- at least for a few years.

IsThisAGoodIdea · 25/06/2013 22:37

I don't think it will be a problem because it's bound to be something very normal and middle-class and not unusual. I mean, if you named your DD Kate now, nobody would think it was after Kate Middleton would they?

Elquota · 25/06/2013 21:49

No, it wouldn't bother me.

If I meet a 20-something William, I don't think "Prince William" at all.

PrincessOfChina · 25/06/2013 20:58

George is so popular anyway, along with William and Harry, I would only think to myself "Oh right, another one". Sorry if that sounds harsh.

hollyisalovelyname · 25/06/2013 20:39

I had a dd. gave her an (for that time) unusual name. 3 months later a celebrity gave her dd the same name with loads of publicity. This celebrity is never out the newspapers.. Aghhhh. Now the name is as common as muck.....Sigh.Hmm

FreedomOfTheTess · 25/06/2013 20:33

Autumn is not American, she is Canadian.

RaisingHooligirls · 25/06/2013 19:50

a great gd

RaisingHooligirls · 25/06/2013 19:50

yeh, if she'd known then she'd have a gd called Savannah! I think there are more night clubs called Savannah. Obviously Peter and Autumn did not need to run their choice past the queen. I like Autumn though. And to be fair, Savannah just sounds American. I know it's not a Royal choice but She is American and their choice proves they're their own people if you know what I mean.

squoosh · 25/06/2013 19:47

Can I just add that I love the fact that the Queen has a great granddaughter called Savannah Grin

Weren't Fergie and Awful Andrew sent back to the drawing board by the Queen when they told her they wanted to call one of their kids Annabell?

RaisingHooligirls · 25/06/2013 19:40

I like Mary. I think Kate & William are pretty dull (in a nice way)and their choice won't be as surprising as Beatrice and Eugenie were at the time. So whatever she chooses, Mary, Jane, George, Frederick, I think it'll be a normal name or a name that is rising in popularity anyway. I'd put a fiver on that!

mrspaddy · 25/06/2013 19:29

I have heard someone betted 100 on Mary at the bookies and they thought they'd got a tip off.. we are going for Mary regardless... would be annoyed if they go for it.. but I honestly can't see why they would and we are going for it anyway.

KittenofDoom · 25/06/2013 19:23

It is likely to be a very common name, so no. All the front-runners are names that I would class as unexceptional (George, Charlotte, Alexandra etc.

In the unlikely event that they went for something unusual, then I would probably avoid it.

RaisingHooligirls · 25/06/2013 18:56

yes. I think it would make you look like a sad ol' royalist copy cat.

xXjunebugXx · 25/06/2013 18:52

It absolutely would.

CruCru · 25/06/2013 18:33

My brother was born on the same day as Prince Harry. My folks waited until the name had been announced before choosing one.

Yep, I'll definitely avoid whatever name they choose (due in Sept/oct so should be safe).

blueemerald · 25/06/2013 17:46

I have the same name as one of the princesses and, despite the fact that she is almost exactly two years younger, my mum used to get asked if it was after the princess. Used to make her Hmm

FobblyWoof · 25/06/2013 17:24

It would put me off, yes.

Alice is another name being guessed and DD is an Alice. Shes a year older but that won't make much of a difference in 20 years time when everyone will think I jumped on the bandwagon as they know three million other Alice's!

halcyondays · 25/06/2013 17:19

If I really liked the name it wouldn't put me off.

YoniMitchell · 25/06/2013 17:12

Bollocks, Charlotte is my top girl's name (family ties). Buggering arse, I will NOT be happy if TRB nicks my name!

Turniptwirl · 25/06/2013 17:10

I agree with whoever said I don't think of Prince William anytime I meet a William even if its someone the same age as the royal William. I might query the wisdom of having two DC both with the same name as royals as another poster said she didn't feel she could have a William and Harry!

I'm sure for a while anyone with a dc roughly the same age and with the same name as the royal baby will get comments, but why let it ruin a name you otherwise love? Especially a popular name like George that won't only ever be the baby prince, everyone will know another George as well.

If they call the baby something outlandish and made up and you give your child the same name then I think you would get ridicule and tbh would probably deserve it! But I highly doubt the royal baby will have a made up name!

HorryIsUpduffed · 25/06/2013 17:04

Yes.

Our chosen name for Oct/Nov DS3 is a royal name. I'm going to have serious pangs if they use it.

I thought I was safe because I thought theirs would be a girl, but now I'm not so sure. Argh.

FreedomOfTheTess · 25/06/2013 16:58

I was due a week before the Duchess, but my daughter ended up arriving a little over 4 weeks early (perfectly healthy), so we went with our heart and named her Mary.

It's said to be a "contender" for the Most Important Baby Ever? but I can't see it myself.

If they do use it, well hey, we got their first!!

rockybalboa · 25/06/2013 16:29

Friend of mine just had a baby and moved George to middle name for precisely that reason. I'm due on the same day as the Duchess and to be honest, I think it's unlikely they'd use anything off our list but yes, I think it would put me off. However as you're not due until December, I wouldn't even worry about it yet.

Thurlow · 25/06/2013 16:00

Yes. I am rather irrationally annoyed that DD's name is almost (slight change in spelling) one of the favourites for a girls name. There'll only be 18 months between them so when they are older people might say "oh, after Princess X?", as it's not the commonest of names.
