How many names is too many... one middle name - or is two a bit much?

My dd has 2 middle names...both family names. They flow well together and we love the way that those people will be remembered for the next generation. Her third name is unusual and couldn't say it for a while but never needed to write middle names yet and she's 5. Nobody has ever told us its a bit 'ooh get them' and like you said....who cares what others think. Go for it! x

Mine both have 2 middle names as do I. My brother has about 6!

I say use as many as you want. You and your child can pick and chose how many you use for everyday use. My lo has 2 middle names, the second is a family name which we usually drop for everyday use but is still there if we need it (or can fit them all on forms etc). The only comments we have had about it is to ask about its origin etc no one has ever said its overkill.

DC1 has one, as do DH and I.

DC2 has two for complicated reasons, one of which was added at the eleventh hour.

I fell in love with middle names. They are gloriously pointless, so why not have two?

DC3 will have at least two.

D's has 2, as the only boy we wanted him to have all 3 important family names. When registering him I did ask how many was OK and the girls face was a picture. Apparently some people go for an entire front row or other sports group of names :)

I think two middle names is fine, my DS has two middle names. When I was little, my best friend had two middle names and I was so jealous, I thought it was very exciting to have two middle names. It will be a pain in the bum for DS when he is older and having to fill in computerised forms that insist on your name, including any middle names, but there is only one box for a middle name. I must admit we didn't think of that...

My childhood friend had three middle names and unused to love reciting them all! Can still remember then almost 20yeard later lol!

I think 2 middle names is fine but paranoid about all DCs having the same number so couldn't have DC1 with three and DC2 with only one !

Sometimes people add a second middle name when the discover the three letters spell something funny.

My brother was James Edward until my very waspy (and racist) grandmother realised the whole name including last name spelled 'JEW' so the name Thomas was posted after Edward!!

He got the last laugh though when, as an adult, he converted to Judaism!

i think 1 middle name is the average none or 2-3 is absolutely fine 4 is unusual but just about ok; more than that is just either weird or poncy or both

Our three all have two middle names, one of which is a family name in each case.
All three have safe classic first names, (all three names were in the top 25 when they were born) but having two middle names gives them a "unique" name IYSWIM.
Other children will have the same first name, but no-one else will have their particular combination of names.
