I genuinely adore the sound of this name...and it has a lovely meaning.

I get the HP reference isn't great and the rhyming perhaps...but I'd love to use it...

Siblings are Arlo and Skye,is Myrtle just too different? Do they sit oddly together?

Vita is a million times nicer and goes with Arlo & Skye.

bugsybill · 19/06/2013 13:17

How about Myrrh?

GirlsonFilm · 19/06/2013 12:11

ps she is known by family and friends a Myr

GirlsonFilm · 19/06/2013 12:10

My sil is Myrtle and hates it - is a policewomen and is referred to by the local population as Myrtle the Turtle (and worse turtle-head) and also feels the myrtle shurb is round, fat and plain (all her sisters have flower names and she feel she got the short end of the deal).

squoosh · 19/06/2013 12:09

Vita is lovely!

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 19/06/2013 12:00

Vita on the list already,I don't like Vera.

I like Mabel (my grandmothers middle name) ,but I'm worried its going to get very popular...

Vita?

HoneyandRum · 19/06/2013 11:56

Actually I will revise my gushing post above after asking DCs all ardent Harry Potter fans. They do all immediately think of Moaning Myrtle the whiney, annoying ghost.

What about Vera?

natandmat · 19/06/2013 11:25

I really like it!

bigkidsdidit · 19/06/2013 10:53

I like old lady names in general. But Myrtle is dreadful.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 19/06/2013 10:51

Really? Seriously? Yikes.

squoosh · 19/06/2013 10:49

Merle as suggested above is lovely though!

squoosh · 19/06/2013 10:47

Honestly I think it's an awful, awful name. On a par with Beryl or Gertrude.

Also it sounds totally at odds with your other kids names, not that they have to match or anything, but I'd assume you'd named her after a rich elderly relative in the hopes of getting in her will good books.

bootsycollins · 19/06/2013 08:10

Imagine it being said in a spouse accent " Meeeeeeeeeeeeertle"

I would cry if my name was Myrtle, then get it changed by deed pole.

tigrou · 19/06/2013 07:57

I knew a lady once called Myrtée (French Canadian). I like that.

JumpingJackSprat · 19/06/2013 07:51

What about Merle? Sounds similar but much better imo

UpTheFRIGGinDuff · 19/06/2013 07:50

Most of those are or have been,on my list Bugsy
I have plenty of other names on my list, but none I like as much,I know lots of people don't like it,but I love the sound of it,I think it's very pretty.

I'm due the beginning of December Zola

I honestly don't see what's so horrible about it....it's a perfectly lovely name...just as nice as Agnes,Enid,Maud,Beatrice...

No

TheToysAreALIVEITellThee · 19/06/2013 07:40

It's a baby turtle!! Don't do it to your child, do you hate her already?

Vatta · 19/06/2013 07:32

Sorry, it's terrible.

exoticfruits · 19/06/2013 07:13

I automatically see Myrtle as a very wet individual,of indeterminate years, dressed in beige! I can't change it to picture a baby or child.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 19/06/2013 07:04

I know a Myrtle who must be about 2 by now. Have to say I remain unconvinced.

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 19/06/2013 07:01

You can't be serious?

You can't do that to a child.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 19/06/2013 06:59

My main concern would be Moaning Myrtle. Speaking as someone who got called Moaner Lisa every time I had a (perfectly reasonable) grump in my teens!

HoneyandRum · 19/06/2013 06:56

Go for it! So many people all like the same names on here that it's very easy to predict what are/will be popular names. If the MNers think it's old-fashioned it will be perfect as it won't be rediscovered for at least another decade.

I remember when I mentioned at work (two decades ago) that I liked the name Olivia everyone was horrified and moaned on and on. When my first dd went to primary there were no less than 6 Olivias in the class above! I didn't use it because I realized how popular it would be.

If no one likes it and can't imagine using it - I consider that a positive thing!
