Elodie vs Sophie?

Ok- I said the other day that the front runner often changes daily for me!

Which do you prefer, Elodie or Sophie?

Middle name Grace.

Sibling has name beginning with E.

I know that they're both popular names but I figure that's for a reason as I like them both!Smile

So, which do you prefer?

As long as the emphasis is on the first E and not elOdie both Elladie and Ellodie sound the same I think. I usually say it's Melodie without the M for people who don't get it.

Ha squidwoman that's funny! So I'm thinking you're a fan of both names then! And no- definitely no accent in the first E as I know the French don't!

Cru I've been wondering if that would bother me as I definitely like the correct pronunciation of Ello dee in favour of Ella dee. Someone mentioned that on another thread and it has made me think but I still love the name.

I'm an Elodie and my DD is Sophie. I'm a huge fan of both. I'm 41 and still get complemented on my name all the time. No need to shorten it. I have to spell to out a fair bit but it's worth it.

Just please don't stick an accent on the first E like the woman whose birth I read about in a magazine in the doctor's waiting room. The French don't!

Both are lovely. Thing with Elodie is people will get the spelling / pronunciation wrong - will that bug you?

Yes I think it's difficult to know what people will shorten a name to and it'd be important to not dislike that version too. I know that Ellie is popular but I still think its pretty so that's not too much of a problem for me.

I think we have the same taste - DD was very nearly Sophie and I also love Elodie! (Went for Charlotte, nn Lottie in the end). It would be a close call between those two but personally i think Sophie just has the edge.

Sophie is far more classic, and not over-popular now. Elodie is rather faddy.

Sophie is hugely popular, but it won't date as Elodie will.

Sophia is even better. Classy, timeless, elegant. Lovely.

I prefer Elodie. And would use Sophia in preference to Sophie.

I'm not (too) bothered about popularity I don't think. I've been really keen on Elodie for a while now but my concern is that it would mean the same initial as my DS. Can't decide if that would bother me or not!

I like both, Elodie is probably more unusual, if you'd rather have a different initial you could add an M and have Melodie?

Don't like Sophie at all. Can't understand the infatuation with it because it reminds me of the word soapy (soapy water). Elodie is a beautiful, classic French name, but if it's growing in popularity that would put me off.

Love Elodie. Wanted it for DD but was vetoed by DH for reasons that are consigned to the past. Sophie is lovely but way too popular IMVHO.

Both are lovely, but Sophie is so popular. My dcs have/had 2 in each of their classes at primary. I love Elodie, but really dislike 'Ellie' which it would likely be shortened to. I know 2 Elodies, one known as Ellie and one as Lodie.

Elodie. Sophie is ok but I know many of them so it's a bit "meh" to me now.
