Medieval spelling of Alice, Wife of Bath was Alysoun (ie Alison)

I like it

doradoo · 18/06/2013 20:21

My dd has this as a middle name which comes from her Dutch heritage.

I think it's beautiful!

Turniptwirl · 18/06/2013 18:31

Loved it since I was 15 and read a book where the main character was called Alys

GibberTheMonkey · 18/06/2013 08:03

Alys Fowler seems manage just fine

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/06/2013 21:06

It's lovely.

I always read Alice as a lice which is rather off putting really.

zgaze · 17/06/2013 19:51

It's also the name of the Wife of Bath in the Canterbury Tales - she refers to herself as Alys and Alyson

zgaze · 17/06/2013 19:49

It's lovely

We have Welsh blood so justified the use that way but actually I mostly just preferred the way it looked. It is surprising how many people first pronounce it Aleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees though. Especially since our surname basically ends in eeeeeeeees. Would be an extremely odd choice if we did pronounce it like that!

Clawdy · 17/06/2013 19:35

Alys was the daughter of King Louis VII of France, back in the 1100s. Nothing Welsh there.

ItsYonliMe · 17/06/2013 15:51

Unless you are Welsh then spell it Alice.

scarlettsmummy2 · 17/06/2013 15:49

Don't like it spelt that way. Looks like it is made up if you are not familiar with welsh spelling.

BackforGood · 17/06/2013 15:48

Only if you are living in Welsh Wales, anywhere else, your dd is going to have to spend her life 'correcting' people, or automatically spelling her name every time she has to give it.

weebarra · 17/06/2013 15:41

Prefer it to Alice but can't use it as we have an Alasdair! I don't think you'd have to be Welsh to use it - there are an awful lot of Islas and Finlays without Scottish heritage!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/06/2013 15:35

Fine if you're Welsh, otherwise just use Alice, it's lovely.

JacqueslePeacock · 17/06/2013 15:10

Not pretentious, just Welsh. Wouldn't use it if neither you nor DH is Welsh though.

GibberTheMonkey · 17/06/2013 14:48

Yes lovely if there's a welsh connection.
I would use it

squoosh · 17/06/2013 14:14

I think Alys looks much prettier than Alice which looks prissy. But it will be a pain in the neck explaining the spelling constantly.

I'd use it if I was Welsh but not otherwise.

MrsOakenshield · 17/06/2013 14:10

unless you're Welsh and in Wales I would stick with Alice, otherwise you'll spend all your time spelling it and telling people how to pronounce it (when I read it I read Aleece, not Alice).

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/06/2013 14:07

Lots of then in South Wales ATM.

I think it's pretty.

LingDiLong · 17/06/2013 14:06

Love it - it is the welsh spelling and is a family name from my paternal grandmother; my sister and her daughter both have it as a middle name.

Christelle2207 · 17/06/2013 13:02

it is Welsh (as am I) and I love it. On our list (though dc likely to be a boy) . I can understand people not liking it but can't see why it would be pretentious. Having said that I probably would not use it if not Welsh myself.

Pinkflipflop · 17/06/2013 09:55

Awful! What's wrong with Alice? Confused

First time I read the post I thought you were trying to say A-Leese!

MummyPig24 · 17/06/2013 09:37

I much prefer Alice.

MustafaCake · 16/06/2013 23:20

Love it but child will be forever having to spell her name out and correct people.

I would only use this spelling if you and/or DP are welsh or you are living in Wales.

AmIGoingMad · 16/06/2013 23:05

I like it with this spelling. I also like Alice. I don't think Alys sounds pretentious. I would probably think that you had Welsh links with using this spelling, not that you need them.
