It's also the name of the Wife of Bath in the Canterbury Tales - she refers to herself as Alys and Alyson

We have Welsh blood so justified the use that way but actually I mostly just preferred the way it looked. It is surprising how many people first pronounce it Aleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees though. Especially since our surname basically ends in eeeeeeeees. Would be an extremely odd choice if we did pronounce it like that!

Alys was the daughter of King Louis VII of France,back in the 1100s. Nothing Welsh there.

Don't like it spelt that way. Looks like it is made up if you are not familiar with welsh spelling.

Only if you are living in Welsh Wales, anywhere else, your dd is going to have to spend her life 'correcting' people, or automatically spelling her name every time she has to give it.

Prefer it to Alice but can't use it as we have an Alasdair! I don't think you'd have to be Welsh to use it - there are an awful lot of Islas and Finlays without Scottish heritage!

Not pretentious, just Welsh. Wouldn't use it if neither you nor DH is Welsh though.

I think Alys looks much prettier than Alice which looks prissy. But it will be a pain in the neck explaining the spelling constantly.

I'd use it if I was Welsh but not otherwise.

unless you're Welsh and in Wales I would stick with Alice, otherwise you'll spend all your time spelling it and telling people how to pronounce it (when I read it I read Aleece, not Alice).

Love it - it is the welsh spelling and is a family name from my paternal grandmother; my sister and her daughter both have it as a middle name.

it is Welsh (as am I) and I love it. On our list (though dc likely to be a boy) . I can understand people not liking it but can't see why it would be pretentious. Having said that I probably would not use it if not Welsh myself.

I would only use this spelling if you and/or DP are welsh or you are living in Wales.

I like it with this spelling. I also like Alice. I don't think Alys sounds pretentious. I would probably think that you had Welsh links with using this spelling, not that you need them.
