Gregory = Greggs?

Discussing baby names for DC2 with DH last night.

I suggested Gregory. DH said that we couldn't name a child Gregory, as everyone would think that we'd named him after Greggs (the bakers, famous for it's sausage rolls and other pasties).

So, this question is for anyone who, like us, lives in or near a town / city that boasts at least one Greggs bakery shop.

If you met a little boy called Gregory, would you think that his parents had named him after Greggs?

Lovely name (vetoed here by DH because it was the name of his first school (St Gregory's). It would never, ever cross my mind that Greggs would be the inspiration.

You have my sympathy OP. My DH is prone to coming up with absolutely ridiculous veto reasons like this one.

I'm also from Greggs land - 7 in my city centre including a 24 hr one .
Never would I equate Gregory to Greggs !

Lovely name. I had it on my list for dd if she'd been a boy, after Gregory Peck because DH wouldn't let me have Atticus.

Not mine either....does your dh come out with such gems on a regular basis?! Mine does, I just switch.off & allow him to become background noise!

Is Adams still a clothes shop? Not sure if it didn't close down. But do people connect Adam to Adams? I wouldn't .

Gregg Wallace from masterchef for example?. It's not that unusual to spell it with two gs.

Why would anybody spell Greg with two Gs though? that is something I've only seen on the shop. Greg Rusedski, Greg Wallace (can't think of any others) they all spell greg like that so just don't put in the extra G and problem solved.

No, wouldn't even think parents who called their son Gregg had named their son after the bakers.

That's ridiculous. I suppose if you call him Gregg then people will think of Greggs (doh!) but Gregory is a good strong name. I like it.

Don't like the name.

But I wouldn't instantly think 'Greggs'.

So if you like it, but not a possible association, I don't think it's a problem. There isn't one!

No more than I'd think a child called Mark was named after M&S! Like Gregor and Gregory a lot. Less keen on the nickname Gregg but not because of Greggs!

I live in the North East, birthplace of Greggs, and even have a 24hr branch in my town - I would never make that connection.

On an unrelated point, I think Gregor is much nicer than Gregory.

I'd never heard of the bakers until we returned to the UK a couple of years ago. Apparently their rapid expansion to every town is relatively recent.
