i really like this name,dh likes it too but there is something about it,i hate to use the word but is it a bit chavvy?

I know its not too popular on mn because of lolita but i dont think of that when i think of the name,in fact more likely to think of charlie and lola!Like the kinks song so that doesnt bother me.

I think it's lovely and it doesn't have any negative connotations for me. However, I think it's a little girl's name, not a 30-something professional woman.

Not sure. It's a noughties middle class meedja name to me. Was once at a party full of TV producers who'd all had babies around the same time and I stood with five of them asking about their daughters. They were called: Leila, Lila, Lola, Lula and Layla, which they announced without a trace of amusement at the similarities between the names. I nearly choked on the prosecco!

Happymum, I guess it depends upon what kind of adult the child grows up to be. I think that Lola suits an arty type; someone creative in the visual or performing arts. I can also see it working on an old lady - sort of like Pearl in that way.

Dolores means "sorrows" a bit like doleful.
It is a reference to "Our Lady of Sorrows"

I think it is fine and cute for a child, but when your DC is older I think it just sounds a bit naff and she really wouldn't like it once she is 16+.
Maybe find a long name which could be shortened or lola used as a nickname.

My DC are grown up now and all say they are so glad they had names which suit them both as an adult, as well as suited them when they were a child.

love the name but it never made my shortlist because of the kinks song; makes me think of transvestites and i would sing it ALL the time.

dd dressed as Lola for school (charlie's sister rather than the cross dresser) and the song was just on repeat in my head all week, dd now knows all the words too!

I have an 8 year old Lola...but she's a dog. I love the name but used it for the dog as I personally wouldn't use it for a child.

It's common enough these days to be unlikely to attract comment anywhere but on MN so if you like it, go for it.

tbh i only heard stripper name on mn,before then i wouldnt think its a stripper name at all.Also i think it depends on the age of the person,i guess to someone a lot olde rit would be a stripper name.Coco is an old fashioned name.Isnt it short for Dolores?

I have a 13 week old Lola. And we love her name no matter what people think. Not all strippers are called coco and Lola

Yes i do agree it is similar to names like coco and tallulah,in fact i do like Tallulah but not sure i would actually use it.hmm thats given me something to think about!

I think it's a gorgeous name. It's got the right balance between vintage and modern sounding, IMO. It has a great meaning too: "strong woman" in Spanish (that's if you're not meaning it as a diminutive of Dolores).

Not at all "chavvy", and agree that it is in a similar vein to names like Coco, Ella, Heidi, Tallulah. Funky vintage, maybe?

I agree it has stripper/slightly seedy connotations. I love the Kinks song but it is about a one night stand. And there's the Barry Manilow song - 'Her name was Lola, she was a show girl...'. What about Iola as an alternative?
