Opinions on a girls' name list

Squarecrisps · 31/05/2013 13:39

So we've sort of got a shortlist, some I'm not 100% sure about, so opinions would be welcome!

Edith
Audrey
Coralie
Sadie

Ideally, I'd like a name that's a bit more unusual, but I think most of the above will be fairly common - they are the only names we can agree on!

Any suggestions of similar names also welcome!

Like Audrey most from your list, think it's quite a popular name in France (as is Sylvie - like that too)
I love the name Jean - it sounds so solid and friendly but isn't common at the moment.Or Gina.

MrsEllsmore · 31/05/2013 20:55

Coralie is my favourite, not sure where Harriet came from but I do like Hattie. Otherwise not keen on the others much prefer Aubree than Audrey.

tilbatilba · 31/05/2013 20:08

Edith and Audrey - both beautiful !

AprilMeadow · 31/05/2013 20:06

My god daughter is Edith/Edie and it's a beautiful name and fits her perfectly. She is now 5 and i dont know any other children with that name.

Audrey is sweet there is the American version of Aubrey.

spiderlight · 31/05/2013 19:53

My dad wanted to call me Wilhelmina!! Even worse, I would have been Wilhelmina Williams Hmm

I love Audrey - I have a glorious, indomitable Auntie Audrey whom I adore, and would have considered it for a DD. Edith is nice too, and she could use Edie if she wanted. Not quite so keen on Sadie but it's a perfectly nice name. Coralie could grow on me, but has the potential for mispronounciation or dodgy abberviations.

NowPlayingZone · 31/05/2013 19:46

Coralie.
Sadie is my second fave.
I know a few Edith's- not keen

JojoMags · 31/05/2013 18:38

Or Frances?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/05/2013 18:17

Don't like Edith but love Edie. Like Audrey. Really, really hate Sadie, sorry.

JojoMags · 31/05/2013 18:17

Do you like Flora or Elspeth?

JojoMags · 31/05/2013 18:14

Love Edith.
Not keen on Audrey.
Coralie is OK
Sadie, really dislike.

Elquota · 31/05/2013 17:21

Love Coralie, and yes I'd rhyme it with morally. Edith also nice with Edie as nickname.

Squarecrisps · 31/05/2013 14:41

Ha!! Willamena, no way! Yeah, I know old lady names are very much love or loath.

Quite like Harriet, but not a fan of Louisa.

OP posts:
Squarecrisps · 31/05/2013 14:40

Coralie would rhyme with "morally" - I knew someone at Uni with the name, and that's how they pronounced, and I have an OUP dictionary of baby names from 1950 that also says that's how it's pronounced.

Ah yes, hadn't thought of the Sadie/dog thing, but it isa popular dog's name isn't it?

Quite like Elsa, but can't use as a family member has already...

Love Iris and Violet, but DH has vetoed.

snice · 31/05/2013 14:38

Elsa is lovely
Louisa?
Harriet?

Owllady · 31/05/2013 14:37

I like sadie but I am not keen on the rest tbh

I remember when i was pregnant with my third my Mum suggested Willamena for a girl! which I think is on a par with the other old lady names on your list :o

I don't know any child with any of those names so I think your threshold for "common" is very different from mine. That or we live in very different areas.

I like them all: Edith most, Coralie least.

TolliverGroat · 31/05/2013 14:33

I like Edith, Audrey (I know a small Audrey who is half-French and definitely fits your positive associations) and Sadie. Coralie I ought to like but it makes me think of silvery or goldy or bronzy so personally I'd prefer Coraline.

rockybalboa · 31/05/2013 14:32

Coralie is really really pretty. I have a friend called Sadie and she gets annoyed by how many dogs she meets with the same name! Edith/Edie also v lovely. I'd have issues with how people would prounounce Helena (ie like Helen at the start or like Elaine with an H at the beginning and a at the end)

forgetmenots · 31/05/2013 14:31

I had a couple of these on my list btw and I also had

Elsa
Martha
Orla
Carey
Grace
Violet
Iris

forgetmenots · 31/05/2013 14:30

Love Sadie, Coralie and Edith nn Edie. Not keen on Audrey and detest Helena for entirely petty reasons (one may or may not have been a bully at our school...!)

Elsa?

weebarra · 31/05/2013 14:25

Love Sadie (only ever known 2, one is 5 and one is 60!). Also like Coralie but not the other two.

night1971 · 31/05/2013 14:23

Edith - solid respectable
Audrey - elegant and timeless
Coralie - pretty
Sadie - not to my taste

BTW LOVE Helena.

Squarecrisps · 31/05/2013 14:20

Thanks everyone - doesn't seem to be a consensus at all! I think possibly Edith might become common, although I like it. Audrey I go to and fro on - sometimes I think "french, gamine, Audrey Tatou etc" and sometimes I think "old woman"!! Sadie I like, but wonder if it's a bit plain and also a bit nicknamey i.e. as nn for Sarah? I think overall, with all things considered, I like Coralie the best - you could have Cora or Corrie as a nickname - DH doesn't like Cora though.

I really like Iris, DH hates it sadly. I also quite like Elsie and Helena, but same applies.

All lovely names OP. My personal favourite from your list is Coralie, by a country mile.

It's fresh and, I doubt, will be faddy.
