How is it on it's own?? I always thought it was a cute nn for a longer version eg Isabella, Annabelle etc.

Dh and I seriously struggling on a name. We agree on NOTHING!! Except the names used up by friends Sad.

He really likes Bella. It's vastly better than anything else he likes. Can we use it on it's own if we're not Italian Wink?

What do you think?

Isabella and Bella are both beautiful names. I don't like the nn Izzie at all (sorry fergus); I think it ruins a gorgeous name.

IroningBoredDaily · 03/06/2013 13:08

I don't agree at all.

My friend has a daughter named Bella and it suits her perfectly. I have NEVER thought of it as a 'fat name', just beautiful.

Sleepyfergus · 02/06/2013 22:55

I have an Isabella, but I absolutely nipped in the bud any mention or thoughts of it being shortened to Bella. I'm afraid I too see Bella as a 'fat' name, and agree with pps that its up there with the likes of Bertha. Dunno why they make me think that Hmm

Btw, we abbreviate Isabella to Izzie, or Iz.

Ella is nice....I work with a glamourous Russian woman called Ella.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2013 22:49

Oh I see! I don't see it so much with Bella but would agree with you on Bertha. Apologies if anybody has a DD called Bertha Blush

voucherprocon · 02/06/2013 22:48

Haha I don't know, maybe.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 02/06/2013 22:47

Is it cos a capital B looks like a bosom and a belly?

voucherprocon · 02/06/2013 22:33

Yes, like Bertha. It's just a hefty name to me.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2013 21:19

A fat name? Confused

voucherprocon · 02/06/2013 21:15

Nice as a nn,but sounds like a bit if a fat name. Sorry.

SpottyTeacakes · 02/06/2013 17:54

My dd is just Bella Smile it's a great name. The twilight saga is over now and we've only ever had one person (teenage boy) mention it. Dd is almost 3.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/06/2013 17:49

It's lovely but sounds like a nickname to me,probably because it is so often used as one. But it is lovely.

I wouldn't worry about Twilight though. It's flash in the pan pop culture and people probably once said the same about Alice after Alice in Wonderland was published. I've no intention if letting the Harry Potter books/films stopping me using Hermione one day.

squoosh · 01/06/2013 20:46

I prefer Bella to any of the -belle names.

Elquota · 01/06/2013 18:02

I'd only use it as a nickname.

notallytuts · 01/06/2013 14:39

I don't think its too "Twilight" - in the books her real name is Isabella anyway!

GoodbyePorkPie · 31/05/2013 20:27

It's a lovely name.

By the time she reaches adolescence the only people referencing Twilight will be (a very few) people of our generation and she'll just roll her eyes at the tedious oldies.

bootsycollins · 31/05/2013 19:41

I'm loving Bella, go for it bubbatime Thanks

SingleBelle · 30/05/2013 23:55

I agree with Jazz, although I know vaguely that there's a Bella and an Edward on The Twilight saga, it doesn't remind me, the names are too normal. I like Bella.

If you are old like me you'll remember Bella Emberg Wink

toffeelolly · 30/05/2013 22:34

Love Bella, and also Belle.

JojoMags · 30/05/2013 22:23

Its pretty and works on its own. Only thing is it means 'beauty', or 'beautiful' which would be hard to live with if you grew up plain!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 29/05/2013 08:18

Bella is lovely - it can be used as a nickname but I think it stands on its own too.
Twilight phase is dying already. Look at names like 'Harry' people don't automatically think of Harry potter and assume you've named after that. It's just a nice name that happens to be a character from a book (what name isn't!)

IroningBoredDaily · 28/05/2013 23:21

Bella is a lovely name. I know a 4yr old Bella.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 28/05/2013 23:11

Bella is fine, or what about Ella?

amandine07 · 28/05/2013 23:02

I think Bella is lovely as it is- it doesn't need to be a shortened version of something, it is a strong, beautiful name in its own right!
