Any thoughts on this name? How would you pronounce it? She would have Cleo as a nickname..

I used to work withan Irish girl who spelt her name Cleona, she was lovely and it suited her. I'm sure she had the original Gaelic spelling, but spelt it how it wouldread in English iygwim.

I knew someone called Cleona of Irish descent (think it was intended to be English phonetic spelling of the Irish name someone else mentioned). Emphasis was definitely not on the middle syllable though so it was pronounced more like CLEE-uh-nuh rather than Clee-OH-nah.

Made me think of Cleone Foods - Caribbean Pastie maker in the West Midlands. For this reason I would think you had Caribbean roots. I'm not sure many would make this connection though so if you love it, use it.

I think Cleo is a great nickname but I'd go for Cleopatra as full name. Not keen on Cleonie and I think people will not pronounce it consistengly either.

Really? To rhyme with peony. I think it sounds like a nickname for someone who cleans their house too much!

Ive just sounded it out to rhyme with peony and its sounds much nicer than the 'Leonie with a C' pronunciation.

I know an old lady who's very very welsh called Cleone, she's welsh speaking and I just assumed that it was a welsh name?? Perhaps not...

Sounds like a mixture of Cleo/Fiona/Leonie/Meonia and an advert for bleach from the 1930's.

Meonia is pronounced May-On Ire (to rhyme with wire). It means 'The Great One' or 'I am one' in anagram form.

Just looked up Cloelia - mythical super-brave Roman woman. Quite cool, but pronounced 'Cloy-lia', which is too much like cloying for my liking.

Actually, it's Cleopatra that means "glory to her father" (hence the 'patra' bit).

The Greek word for fame is 'kleos' and it's masculine.

I mean, go ahead with Cleonie if you like, but just bear in mind that name meaning books/websites often talk absolute crap.
