Really just like to know your opinion, really struggling with boys names...

I like Lewis but didn't want to call DS a name that was in the top ten, which it has been up here (Scotland) for years.

If you like it then go for it. If you're Australian you probably have some Scottishness in there somewhere anyway!

TheBirdsFellDownToDingADong · 18/05/2013 07:09

Really don't like it.

Or any surnames used as first names.

CooEeeEldridge · 18/05/2013 00:57

Fab, fab name!

LuisGarcia · 18/05/2013 00:54

I like it.

sleepingbeautiful · 18/05/2013 00:53

I like it. Or more to the point, I don't see anything 'wrong' with it, if that is your concern OP. Makes me think of Scotland and of Lewis Hamilton.
As for the chav comment, I guess a "chav" or two may have used the name Lewis, just the same as they may have used any other name! I know an extremely "chav" (or refuse-to-work) family who's daughters are called Matilda and Jemima. Does that make two of Mumsnet's favourite names 'chavvy'?! What a load of rubbish. The only names that really fit that description are ones that have been deliberately mis-spelled to be 'cool'.

kaumana · 18/05/2013 00:27

Love the name. Reminds me of the Isle of Lewis which can only be a good thing.

SPsCliffingAllOverMN · 18/05/2013 00:17

Yes extremely chavvy. Only Benedict will do Grin

My brother is a Lewis. Hes nearly two and suits him. If you like it go for it. Doesn't matter what some people on the internet say

PattieOfurniture · 18/05/2013 00:16

I like it. Our ds mistakenly gets called Lewis a lot and strangely it happened this evening :) his name is quite similar sounding.

themilkmonster · 18/05/2013 00:14

It's my nephew's name. He's 16. It's popular for a reason, it's a nice name!

edwardrocks · 17/05/2013 23:36

I still struggle to understand how a name can be chavvy.

edwardrocks · 17/05/2013 23:35

We called ds2 Lewis. I love it. He is called Lou Lou or Louie for nicknames.

PopUpWorkshop · 17/05/2013 23:33

It's chavvy.

ShadowStorm · 17/05/2013 23:26

Like it.

bananaramma · 17/05/2013 22:22

I like Lewis - good strong solid name, easy to pronounce (unlike Louis which some people prefer to pronounce the French way, Lou-ee).

JonesTheSteam · 17/05/2013 20:41

Love it. Had a lovely uncle with the name who I remember fondly. Would have loved it for one of my dc's but it sounded a bit odd with our surname.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 17/05/2013 20:37

It's everywhere. Way too popular.

StillCloudy · 17/05/2013 20:36

Thanks so much for your responses! Its really interesting.

Well, I'm Australian (living in England) and Ive never met a Lewis in my life! And no plans to move to Scotland either.

Its funny how names or connatations with names stick!

thanks to a silly friend, whenever I heard the name Lewis I then say it in my head like Inspector Morse

eg (in very deep tone) LOOOOOOOWIS (going up slightly at the end)

juvenile I know and I wouldnt let that put you off

OutragedFromLeeds · 17/05/2013 19:42

It's ok, but I prefer Louis (Loo-ee)

beautyfades · 17/05/2013 19:38

Like it..

squoosh · 17/05/2013 19:37

Lots and lots in Glasgow.

Ham69 · 17/05/2013 19:10

My DS's friend is called Lewis. He's 7 and a lovely, bright and polite boy. I really like the name because of this, and also like Louis.

It's very popular round here, and a couple of the Lewises I know aren't very nice kids, which has put me off.

dizzy77 · 17/05/2013 18:39

I know a Lewis, aged about 7. It was a joke at their parent's wedding that their children would be called John and Lewis as that was their mother's favourite shop. Guess they must have thought "actually, that's a nice name." I like it.
