We have a baby Alexandra and we'd like her to have an unusual nickname (not Alex as too masculine and not Lexi)
What do you think of:
Alix
Nelly
Lally
Alexa
Sandie

Ali is very sweet! Makes me think of oriental tales (Ali-Baba :-)

my aunt goes by Xandra.
I like Lexa

Nelly was suggested by her younger brother - not sure where he's got it from! It's true that it doesn't have much resemblance to Alexandra! But it is similar to her middle name though.

I'm not sure how you get Nelly from Alexandra? It's usually short for Helen/Eleanor.

JojoMags · 15/05/2013 08:31

Just use Nelly at home if that seems right, or you don't have to shorten it. I had an Edward who was always Edward, and know a Thomas who is always Thomas, yet both are commonly shortened.

I like Ali though - sweet and simple.

MeerkatMerkin · 15/05/2013 01:53

I can't believe no one's mentioned it! Xsa-xsa (pronounced ja-ja), obviously!

Sorry- I don't recognise your name- should I? Blame my extreme old age if I should and don't.

ajandjjmum · 14/05/2013 16:24

Let's face it seeker, anything I say is sad in your mind. Grin

seeker · 14/05/2013 16:20

You can't inmost nicknames- they just happen. Wait and see.

A bit sad to see the "we wanted her to be feisty, so we don't mind the male connotations remark"........

ajandjjmum · 14/05/2013 16:18

Our Alexandra is an Alex, or occasionally Ally. But I wanted her to be a feisty little thing, so didn't mind the male connotations.

Feels very contrived to invent a nickname. Can you not just see what develops?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 14/05/2013 16:14

Palace Wink

Thurlow · 14/05/2013 14:32

Our Alex is an Allie sometimes. I'm not sure any of the other nicknames flow, personally - from saying 'Alexandra' regularly, it wouldn't feel particularly natural to say anything other than Allie/Alex/Lex.

bollockstoit · 14/05/2013 14:29

You can call her whatever you want really Smile

SleepyCatOnTheMat · 14/05/2013 14:24

Zandra. Ultimately you can use what you like though. I once knew a Laura who everybody called Peggy.

KitchenandJumble · 14/05/2013 14:11

Typical Russian nicknames for Alexandra are Sasha and Shura, both of which I love. Of your list I like Alix, though I'm not sure how it is different from Alex except for the spelling? The pronunciation is the same, isn't it?

Love the name Alexandra! Lots of great nickname options.

Pendipidy · 13/05/2013 22:46

I know someone who called their first child, a girl, Alexandra. They then had a boy who they called Alexander! They then realised the Alex nickname was the same for the two so they always called the girl Sandra and the boy Alex. Bonkers ! Tis true, i swear!

My friends Alexander is Xan (zan) or Xander. I love it.

I know a Lally but not short for Alexandra.

I like Xanny - very cute and baby girl IMO!

Or what about Lexa if you don't like Lexi?

I actually like Andy as well a someone suggested - it reminded me of the character from Dawsons Creek shows age!

Rockinhippy · 13/05/2013 22:41

Andi,

Exa

Andra

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 13/05/2013 22:31
