DH has just told me he likes the name Jess for a boy, I sort of like it but am undecided. We like the name Isla for a girl.
We already have two children a dd and a ds not pregnant yet but we are thinking about ttc no3 soon, we like to get names sorted first!

It's not just in Scotland that the term 'you big Jessie' gets used. It means you daft bugger, you big softie, you idiot etc.

I would think his name being mistaken for a girl's would be the least of my concerns.

TalkUsernameYoudLike · 10/05/2013 14:57

I like Jesse/Jess and would use it, BUT (and like some have already said) it's the teasing thing.

I think you should go with Jesse as he would mistaken for a girl with just Jess imo. Jess is fine as a nickname though.

ELR · 10/05/2013 10:48

Thanks donkey! We have chosen Isla for a girl. Will be ttc from August.

Smile It's green lights for a 2014 baby Jesse (or a DD!) then.

ELR · 10/05/2013 10:27

My other two are Holly and Joe so think Jesse sounds ok with them.

Were you thinking of the Johnny Cash song "A boy named Sue" Corygal?!

I like Jesse (yes 2nd 'e' said aloud) but not Jess for a boy.

Jesse is one of those names sometimes labelled 'trying too hard" but what a nice change from the top 10. Does it sound all right with your other DCs' names is all I'd ask?

TigOldBitties · 10/05/2013 03:24

We have a Jesse, late teens now, but I think probably 95% of the time he gets called Jess. People who know him always end up shortening it to Jess, and I probably only use Jesse when he's in trouble! For example his football coach and entire team call him Jess.

I've asked him quite a few times if he ever had any issue with his name but he swears he never had any comments.

I think Jesse is great, just use that and shorten it to Jess when you fancy.

Fgs

Corygal · 09/05/2013 22:49

Jesse is Ok - Jess is not unless as a nickname.

Please, please don't call your male child by a female name. It never ends well for the unfortunate child (plus everyone laughs at you behind your back while sympathising for your bullied offspring).

ELR · 09/05/2013 22:45

I have done a little google research ect and I now really like the name Jesse instead of jess although will have of rethink the middle name of James! Our other two don't have middle names so maybe we will just not have one. So all I need to do now is get pregnant!!

Jesse yes (altho wouldn't be on my list) but Jess no. Although I did discover a few years back that Postman Pat's cat Jess is a boy cat...

ilikeyoursleeves · 09/05/2013 21:35

In Scotland if you're called 'a big Jessie' that means you're a bit of a girl! I wouldn't call a boy Jess for that reason.

SconeInSixtySeconds · 09/05/2013 21:33

Couldn't he be a Jessamy nn Jess?

My son looks like that too! Blonde muscly skateboarder might be a pic of him on my page Smile

ELR · 09/05/2013 21:08

Well we have the blue eyes and blonde surfer hair going on already! Ds who is nearly 8 is a proper little surfer dude!
Being thick here but do you pronounce the e in Jesse? I think yes but just read something on google which has confused me!

My DS has a mate called Jesse. Big, strong, strapping boy with shaggy blond hair and piercing blue eyes. No one thinks he has a girls name. If you like it use it.

noddyholder · 09/05/2013 20:56

It isn't a girls name Hmm

ELR · 09/05/2013 20:54

Thanks everyone. I don't mind Jesse but prefer Jess but lie some have said could name Jesse then have Jess for home.
Other names we like are:
Sam
Will but have a nephew William
Ben my brother and a nephew
James DH middle name but don't like Jamie
Also quite like Theo, Isaac and Noah but DH doesn't particulary like them.

BakingTins - it is not a girl's name, Jesse is a biblical male name. I have a 15yo Jesse and he has never, ever been teased. Neither has his best friend Sam which is equally a male/female name no?

JojoMags · 09/05/2013 20:13

We loved Jesse (pn Jess-ay) for a boy, but were disuaded by how common Jessie/Jessica/Jess is for girls - I think Jessica has been in the top 10 girls names for years. If you decide to use it I would go with Jesse and shorten it to Jess at home. If he went to school as 'Jess' I'm afraid he would get teased.
