Weird naming daughters Mia and Amelia??

Hi There,

I have a little girl named Mia, and we love her name. I am pregnant with our second daughter and even before we found out we were having another girl I loved the name Amelia and always thought I'd name my daughter Amelia if I had another one. However, I have now found out that the name 'Mia' is often used as a nickname for 'Amelia'... Would it be weird if I have two daughters named Mia and Amelia? Will it be like giving them the same name? I really love both names. Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks :-D

I have an Amalia, Mia would be too close.

henry and harry Shock no?! seriously?! omg, that'd be funny if it was a big litter of kittens and you got to the end and couldn't think of any more names!!!

JennyMakkers · 09/05/2013 12:52

oh that's lovely and the two names both have their own separate feel, but work well together.

We've now settled on Abigail Lynae. We wanted to choose a name with a special meaning so Abigail is perfect (after Abigail in the Bible, King David's 3rd and wisest wife). Lynae comes from the Linnaea flower which I think is very pretty. Soooo happy with the names! Thanks for everyone's comments! Thanks

Had to share the brother combo of Henry and Harry.

LentilAsAnything · 08/05/2013 21:41

Ooh, choose Abigail - that's my name! My middle name is Alice. Abigail Alice - I think they go together well!

Or how about Aurelia, instead of Amelia?

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 08/05/2013 21:34

Amelia has the nn Amy which would lead to Amy and Mia. Almost palindromes!

Dillydollydaydream · 08/05/2013 16:44

It is fairly similar but I know of a schoolmum who has a William and a Liam! I also know of someone with a Kia and a Kai, I was a lot bit Hmm I must admit!

I was told in the maternity ward that Abigail means peace-maker. She was the wife of King David and talked him out of a huge bloodbath. If meanings are important to you, adopt that one. Can't have too many peace-makers. My Abigail is very proud of this meaning.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 08/05/2013 09:54

Blessed I'm not bothered by the meaning either. All of these are common names, and no one would associate them with those meanings. It's not like you name your child as Parkinsons or Measles, is it?

BlessedMummyx2 · 08/05/2013 09:50

I also read that Amelia is a medical term for a birth defect meaning 'without limbs'. It also means 'hard working or industrious'. To be honest the meaning didn't really put me off the name, if people asked me what it meant I'd just tell the 'hard working' hehe

I came across Abigail in the Bible and after reading her story and how courageous, beautiful and wise she was I just thought it would be the perfect name for our little girl. It also means 'a father's joy' in Hebrew.

I think Mia and Abi goes nicely together!

Here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_%28birth_defect%29

OneLittleToddleTerror · 08/05/2013 09:24

But if it's herbew, wouldn't we be all servants of God? (I'm not religious and even that won't put me off).

For what it's worth, Amelia means without one or more limb. It's the name of a medical birth defect and that meaning is of Greek origin.

[aghast] at my poor typing. Of course I mean referenced and others

Eskino · 08/05/2013 09:18

Sorry, Abigail is a ladies servant, refernced in Pepys among otheres.
I know there is a Hebrew definition which means something lovely but to me it just describes a servant, an abigail.

Mia and Amelia both sound great together Smile

BlessedMummyx2 · 08/05/2013 09:12

I really like Abigail Grace, but my DH isn't to keen on it. Think we've kind of settled on Abigail Lynnae, but there are so many different spellings for Lynnae; trying to figure out which one will work best. :-)

If you aren't bothered about being different then there are a couple of 'staples' that sound nice:
Abigail Grace
Abigail Rose

Or what about:
Abigail Jeanne
Abigail Zara (A to Z :D )
Abigail Aster
Abigail Eve

Exhaustipated · 07/05/2013 18:29

Agree too close. Abigail is nice.

How about

Abigail Pearl
Abigail Joy
Abigail Fern
Abigail Jane
Abigail Iris
Abigail Hope

OneLittleToddleTerror · 07/05/2013 17:27

Just want to say I love Abi. Can't help you with a middle name though.

BlessedMummyx2 · 07/05/2013 17:27

BTW, I was thinking of using Millie as a nn for Amelia before.

BlessedMummyx2 · 07/05/2013 17:26

Thanks for everyone's replies! I think I just have to face the fact that the two names are too similar :-(

However, I've now taken a liking to Abigail (Abi for short) but am struggling to find a middle name that goes well with it. Everything I try sounds very 'clumsy'... Any suggestions? :-)

Never thought of Mia as a nickname of Amelia. Good friend at school and cousin were both called Amelia and it was always Millie. Really like both
names.

PregnantPain · 07/05/2013 16:47

I have an Amelia and her nn is Millie, it was going to be that or Mia. (as a nn)

OneLittleToddleTerror · 07/05/2013 16:39

I thought Mia is a common nn for Amelia. Just is. Don't have to have a reason, does it?

DribbleWiper · 06/05/2013 20:53

Why would Mia be a nn for Amelia?

They're both very commonplace... Amelie's even more popular. Juliet's nice.
