I like names too. My favorite names are River, Flynn, and River. If you would like to find out of the meaning or origin any of the names, you can simply search the internet.

TenthMuse · 01/05/2013 12:17

By the other way, as others have said, don't be too disheartened by people's comments on here. In my experience, when it comes to boys' names in particular many people consider anything beyond the usual Jack/James/Thomas/Joshua suspects to be too try-hard, obscure or ridiculous, but as a teacher I've found that children get on fine with pretty much any name as long as it's not full-on offensive or impossible to spell. This is especially the case if you live in a more multi-cultural area, where children are used to hearing names that are out of the ordinary (I'm in London, and the children and staff I work with wouldn't bat an eyelid on hearing even the most unusual of names). All of my friends' boys have names that are in the top 20, and they complain about having to distinguish themselves from the 2 or 3 in their year group with the same name, so it's swings and roundabouts really!

MummyBurrows · 01/05/2013 12:12

Jasper-i love this name,my personal fave off your list!
Beau-i think its a very girly looking name for a boy
Amos-i think of Stephen K Amos so its a surname to me
Marvin-nice name...JLS member
Fraser-good,I know a few
Rowan-like this one
Flynn-nice but might get confusing if in a class with Finns?
Miles-not keen personally
Roman-Thats an era not a name IMO
Casper-Like this one
River-hippy name but I quite like it
Hector-awful (sorry)
Curtis-I knew one,he was a bully,so don't like the name
Byron-not heard that one before but i keep wanting to read it as Brian Confused
Otis-dogs name
Chester-thats a place not a name imo...
Orlando-same as above

Probably not much help but there you go lol

TenthMuse · 01/05/2013 12:07

Lots of these are lovely, but they're mostly quite 'hipster' and 'now', so something to bear in mind if you want something that won't date. Agree that boys' names are tough - they tend to veer from the incredibly common and boring to the outlandish without much in between. I tend to get the 'dog name' comments too with many of my favourites!

Jasper - love this - would be on my list but sounds dreadful with surname.
Beau - no - a bit girly

Amos - too severe for my taste
Marvin - dislike, sounds wimpy and old-mannish

Fraser - lovely but sounds very Scottish to me - possibly best if there's some kind of connection?
Rowan - like, but love it for a girl so wouldn't use. Rohan more masculine imo.
Flynn - sounds very dashing and heroic but a bit 'sleb trendy'
Miles - dislike due to bad associations with the name.
Roman - still sounds like 'a citizen of Rome' rather than a first name to my ears. Think on of Cate Blanchett's sons is called this?
Casper - quite like this, but not as much as Jasper (plus everyone saying 'friendly ghost' might get a bit tiresome!)
River - is also a guilty pleasure of mine! Would definitely consider using if I were a hippy in California, but sadly that's not the case!

Hector - no, too buttoned up and stereotypically middle-class
Curtis - no
Byron - no - love the poet, but the name sounds a bit wet to me
Otis - too trendy and 'of the moment'.
Chester - fusty and teddy bearish, and people will tend to associate it with the place
Orlando - too frilly/OTT and self-consciously posh

Would go with Jasper, Rohan (spelt this way) or Fraser from this list.

evamummy · 01/05/2013 11:47

I like Rowan, Roman and Orlando from your list the best.

notso · 01/05/2013 09:51

Jasper - it's more of a pets name IMO
Beau - it's a like but wouldn't use
Amos - really like it, was on my list
Marvin- not keen
Fraser- not keen too surnamey
Rowan- I know it's unisex but I know loads of female Rowans so feels girly
Flynn- quite like, bit Disney though
Miles- love it, best on your list IMO
Roman- I do quite like Roman but probably wouldn't use
Casper- not keen
River- I wanted sons called River and Levi when I was 14, nuff said!
Hector- see Jasper
Curtis- quite like.
Byron- surnamey
Otis- really like it, was on my list
Chester- was my first pets name so no.
Orlando- no unless this baby is Bloom Jnr in which case lucky you!

I had Amos, Miles, Otis, Seth, Angus, Jonah, Robin, Noah, and Gryffydd on my list for DC4.
The name I used got loads of negative trying too hard comments on here (WTF does that mean anyway I was trying hard by DC4!) and a few in RL but now it always seems to be suggested, I love it!

Snazzynewyear · 01/05/2013 09:22

From your list, I like Miles and Fraser and LOVE Byron.

Thewhingingdefective · 01/05/2013 09:13

Seth and Angus are both cool. I like Fraser and Otis too.

Have you considered:

Jago
Arlo
Breon
Lowen
August
Austin
Saul
Kit
Phillipe/Felipe
Orson
Jonah
Rupert
Bevan

BananaHammocks · 01/05/2013 07:33

Bearandcub I don'y like names that are better known as surnames so that's Vaughan, Bennett, Blair and Blaine out. Peter, Alistair and Donald are too familiar and therefore boring to me due to being more popular for mine and my parents generations. Rory is a bit cutesy for me. Ivor and Adair are good suggestions unfortunately neither of them grab me!

OP posts:
MortifiedAdams · 01/05/2013 07:03

The only one I like on there is Roman, but couldnt have it as my surname is (almost) Candle.

rachel234 · 01/05/2013 07:02

I like Roman and Amos. Or how about Quentin or Tristan?

Bearandcub · 01/05/2013 07:02

What about classic but under used names ie
Peter
Vaughan
Ivor
Alistair
Bennett
Adair
Blair or Blaine
Donald
Gary
Rory

Ok Gary was a joke. From your list I like Fraser and Rowan best. Jasper, beau, Hector are really too dependent on your area and accent to be first names but work well as middle names. Flynn is too popular. I prefer Kester to Chester. The rest are not for me.

thekitchenfairy · 01/05/2013 06:25

Total bias... I have aRowan and we thought we would get stick for it but it is considered to be a 'strong' name round here... He suits his name and I am glad we had courage to go a little off the beaten track. Go with your instinct... He will grow into his name :))

mummybare · 01/05/2013 06:21

My favourites are Flynn, Hector, Casper and Byron.

BananaHammocks · 01/05/2013 06:01

MorphandChas yes also like Seth and Angus!

sweetestcup River is a guilty pleasure, very unlikely I'd ever actually use it! I also think they sound a bit trendy but all other names seem too popular, too boring or way too out there! Aaargh!

Not much of a consensus there! I agree that Beau and Rowan are too feminine and River is a bit too silly and Casper will invite too many 'friendly ghost' comments but nobody has pointed out anything too horrific about the others.

Most of them are names I already wouldn't use either for reasons that you have stated or because they don't work with surname.

Those of you who think they are too doggy/try-hard, whats woud you suggest? Are you tastes more mainstream/popular?

emmyloo2 · 01/05/2013 05:00

Jasper - love this
Beau - really don't like this
Amos - too hipster, trendy for me
Marvin - don't like this
Fraser - love this
Rowan - ok
Flynn - overused along with Finn
Miles - ok but little dull
Roman - like this
Casper - love this
River - nope
Hector - adore this - my favourite of them all
Curtis - nope
Byron - nope
Otis - love this
Chester - actually really like this
Orlando - not unless you are Italian

thermalsinapril · 01/05/2013 01:04

My favourites from your list:

Jasper
Miles
Casper
Amos
Hector

sweetestcup · 30/04/2013 23:00

Most of them are awful, as if people would be trying too hard to be different, its a child not a dog. Curtis and Fraser only 2 I would consider. River? Seriously?

CautionaryWhale · 30/04/2013 23:00

Jasper - carrott conran don't like it
Beau - bridges, brummel, one of ulrike's kids, it's ok
Amos - hate it
Marvin - gaye, not keen
Fraser - hines, also not keen
Rowan - atkinson, it's ok
Flynn - miranda kerr's son, errol, quite like it
Miles - bit posh - prefer myles too -this life
Roman - nope
Casper - ghost
River - phoenix
Hector - house, dislike
Curtis - prefer Kurt
Byron - just no
Otis - redding, it's ok
Chester - just no
Orlando - and Bloom (Miranda hart episode) Grin

So my top 5-6 from your list

  1. Flynn 2. Rowan 3. Beau 4. Myles/Kurt 5. Otis

Bottom 5-6 I would delete from your list

  1. Byron 2. Chester 3. Amos 4. Casper 5. Jasper/Hector
