What is the MN consensus on Avis (for a girl?)

Avonlea Village Improvement Society.

MummyBurrows, I appreciate that you are pregnant and hormonal and have read far too much into this thread.

For the record, she said car hire too so we can all move on! I will untie her and stop the waterboarding immediately Grin

Car hire.

Back away from the friend. Wink

seventiesgirl · 21/04/2013 16:39

And again, car hire

AngryAndLost · 21/04/2013 14:54

In lithuanian language AVIS means sheep.

I have no problems with people wanting opinions on names,I myself have 2 threads on here asking for opinions on the names me and my DH have picked out. My problem as such is the fact that ur not asking on here for yourself or even for ur friend,ur asking because u r,in ur own words, trying to "foist" it on ur friend when its not ur business and its not right for anyone to do that.

Plus I've got a feeling that if u could of gotten enough support behind u on here in favour of the name then the next time u see or speak to ur friend u would probably mention it again while she politely grits her teeth and come out with something along the lines of "well its gone down really well on mumsnet, everybody said they liked it" as if it somehow justifies why she should use it as the name for her child when she clearly doesn't want to.

Giving a friend,or stranger on here,a suggestion is fine, but imo its not fine to essentially try and force them to use it just because u like it so much. Mention it once and then leave it alone,if she was tempted or liked the sound of it she will consider it and perhaps even use it,but seeing as ur "foist"ing it on her then its pretty clear ur just nagging and going on about it and it will be winding her up even if she won't say as much to u.

I apologise if I've caused any offence,I don't mean to,but I simply don't agree with what you've done or with u,or anyone else-including my mother-for that matter, that tries to name somebody elses baby for them when its not their child or decision to make. It comes across to me like uve just basically come on here to try and rally support in favour of ur choice, almost as if ur tempted to try and somehow force her into using Avis if u had gotten the response u were probably hoping for but didn't get.

I apologise again as I am having an incredibly hormonal day mixed in with not feeling well so I'm not in the best of moods and am all but at the end of my tether with my mum trying to force me into using one of her chosen names and to me u just sound like ur doing to same thing to ur pregnant friend and probably don't realise how irritating it is. Its just pushed all the wrong buttons with me,not that my opnion on the matter would be any different on a good day mind, but still,I probably have "projected" more than I should have done and come across as being really rude/nasty and a right b!tch but I'm really not,I've just got a gob on me today even the cat is giving me a wide berth today so I really, honestly,am sorry if I've upset or offended anyone xx

YouDontWinFriendsWithSalad · 19/04/2013 20:07

SouthernComforts watch your step, it's scary in here! :)

I will go against the grain and say I like Avis.

SouthernComforts · 19/04/2013 17:14

Jeez. Obviously I was joking, but that hasn't come across. I have about 8 pregnant family/friends. If they ask me for ideas for names I will tell them names I like. One of them is Avis.

I thought it was an interesting name, I didn't use it myself but I thought I'd get people's opinions.

SouthernComforts, I admit I had the same thought that MummuBurrows had -- why are you poking your nose into the naming of someone else's baby? If you have many pregnant friends why have you singled out one in particular for the name Avis (or have I misread what you said and you are trying to get them all to pick it?)

And to be fair to MummyBurrows, you yourself used the word 'foist'.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 19/04/2013 16:00

She may be projecting but she's got a very good point!

The first thing I thought was Mavis without the M. Then I thought car hire. When I say the word, though, it is quite a nice name!

SouthernComforts · 19/04/2013 15:52

Woah MummyBurrows, projection much? I was being a bit tongue in cheek.

I just felt like getting an opinion on a name I like. Sorry that it has offended you so much.

I've never heard of the car hire company (possibly because I've never hired a car and walk/drive round with my eyes shut!)

I know an Avis. She's about 70 though. I'm not keen to be honest.

Sarah0378 · 19/04/2013 15:14

Car hire. Seeing the title of this thread I actually thought it was a spammer advertising.

Bunbaker · 19/04/2013 15:09

Car hire.

MummyBurrows · 19/04/2013 15:04

Why are u trying to foist it onto one of ur pregnant friends if its a name u like? What if u hav another child, wouldn't u rather keep the name for that?

I may sound rude now but if she's having none of it-which I'm assuming she isnt-then why not give up and leave her to it? Only saying this as I'm having the exact same issue with my mother who keeps throwing the same names at me (that she likes and knows I dont!) on a daily basis and its driving me round the fecking bend so can imagine if ur doing the same with Avis to ur friend then she's probably feeling the exact same way I am which is one of growing frustration and the urge to say "Shut the hell up! Its nots happening!"... Sorry but it does get really annoying after a while, especially if uve made it clear u don't like the name usually by saying "I'll think about it" out of sheer politeness, not because u have any intention of actually considering it ...

As for the name itself, personally I think its a silly name,it sounds like its supposed to be Mavis but someone got lazy or made a typo and forgot the M...x

flipchart · 19/04/2013 14:23

It's DH's ex girl friends name.

Tbh I like it.

Still18atheart · 19/04/2013 14:19

Car hire sorry

She'll be confused with all the Ava's in her class too. They are dozens of baby girl Ava's around here

BehindLockNumberNine · 19/04/2013 14:11

Car hire!!!!!!

SouthernComforts · 19/04/2013 14:10

It's funny you all say that, because I know an adult Avis in RL and I've never heard anyone make the connection, and she has never complained about it.
