Husband loves the name Ty (Tye) for a boy.

I'm really trying to love it too as I pretty much forced my favourite name on him for our first son.

Reason I am a bit unsure is I think it sounds a bit nicknamey?

Can I have your thoughts please?

I think Tye is better than Ty. Tye is a surname so could possibly be used as a first name. Ty just looks very nicknamey to me.

I came to suggest Tadgh. Its common enough now that i think most people would know, or at least get it after being told once - despite the spelling it's quite an easy name to say. I do know a Tadgh that spells it Tighe, if that would work any better pronunciation wise?

I think, for a boy, it is a pretty name and leaves a little intrigue. I dont like it for a girl...it gets confusing, namely Tyra....as in Banks, who set that whole thing off.

My middle name is Ty...just Ty. I have received many compliments upon my name and it is unique, however, people sometimes ask if it is short for...other full names and ask spellings, lol. I am the only one at my age, among two others whom have this name. Glad i am not a other bland name.

Hahaha thanks for all your comments. I guess it's always going to be a name that a lot of people don't like. We are not chavvy, but not pretentious enough to completely rule it out either!

Ah, definitely not the same one then wizardofos. The dad of the one I know is also a martial arts instructor funnily enough. He's a tai chi champion.

It is a western name in the US. There's a pro bull riding event called the Ty Murray Invitational. He was a very successful bull rider.

also the boys at school will have fun with it... Ty(dy) up! What's the Ty(me)? tyre, Type, Ty(ger) ... actually its a syllable rather than a name. Sorry.

Ty - sounds either asian or like its short for something else (such as Tyrone). I'm not a fan of it TBH.

What does your DH like about it? It can't be shortened maybe?

BinarySolo - no not a belly dancer that I know of. This Tai is in her 20's. I think named so because her Dad is a martial arts instructor!

Makes me think of Mike Tyson and dog breeds with violent reputations. I like Kit as a short boys name. No offence intended just giving an honest opinion.

I personally would categorise that under Chav names.

I know that sound harsh and maybe I'm a snob and I'm know many people would consider the names of my DC as pretentious but just giving my opinion, which after all you asked for, so no offence meant. Smile

Tadhg does not have a "soft" g at the end. It's a fully pronounced g.

It does, however, have a soft Irish T at the start.

It's more Thigh-g than Tie-g.

Lovely name, but not really at all like Ty.
