Which one do you prefer?

Shortlist of girls names at the moment:

Verity
Caitlin
Poppy
Harriet
Emily

Any thoughts? Also love Amelia but it's popularity is a little off-putting.

My Amelia is a 2009 one. Only one in her class (and year group) so I'm pleased about that. We don't shorten it, as its commonly shortened to Millie which I really don't like. (I know Bout 5 dogs called Millie)

Very jealous you get to use Harriet as dh won't consider it. Also not keen on the nn for Harriet too. Hmm

The Verity that I knew was always called Vee as well, it's either a common nn for Verity or we knew the same one. Did she have ginger hair and work in human resources? Grin
I like the name Poppy but DD went to ballet with a Poppy and she was such a cute little girlie girl (Poppy, not DD) and I couldn't imagine the name suiting her if she grew into a tomboy.
Harriet is great, it reminds me of the Harriet the Spy book :) She might end up as Harry but you never know, she might be one of those children like my own DD who has a name that can be shortened but you risk your life if you do it...

fan - Amelia was the most popular girls' name of 2012 and it's also quite dated in the sense I don't know many Amelias outside of 2009-2012; I think Grace and Amelia may become the Claires and Helens of the 80s. Lovely names though.

Leaning towards Harriet at the moment.

Verity or Harriet

Two main reasons: knew a beautiful, elegant, intelligent and kind example of each at school and they have the distinction of being well-known without being popular.

I like Harriet and Verity.

It is interesting you have rejected Amelia based on popularity though as (with the exception of Verity) I have come across the other names on your list much more often than Amelia. Ds is 7 now and I can only recall meeting one Amelia but have heard the others lots.

I have a Harriet and I desperately wanted dd2 to be a Verity. I nearly killed DH over it Angry. She has Verity as her middle name, best I could get :(

Verity is my favourite, very elegant, Poppy is my least favourite, and Caitlin is a minefield to pronounce correctly.

Have you looked at Amelie instead of Amelia?

Sebastian is a great name for a boy.

Thanks Grin It's hard, this choosing babies' name business - have found lots of names I like and not many I love! I think it's going to be a toss up between Harriet and Verity!

Hayle - gorgeous name! Grin I love Amelia but just keep thinking about how in the early 80s every girl was named Rebecca or Helen ... But I have an unusual name and spelling it and saying it does get really annoying, hence I've tried to choose pretty but 'normal' names for girls.

decided on Sebastian for a boy - what do you think people? Have had mixed reactions ranging from Hmm to :)

Slightly biased here as dd is Amelia Caitlyn!

However I LOVE Harriet and want to use it for dc2. Also really like Poppy from your list.

I knew a Verity, and it was shortened to 'Vee'
Not the most attractive nickname, whereas Harriet has more choices.

jkk - constance or connie would be on my shortlist if it wasn't for the fact a good friend has a Connie. Sad

dizzy - you sound like my friend, who keeps insisting that Poppy is a child's name! I do love it but our surname is one syllable as well and I do wonder if it makes Poppy sound like a dog's name! No idea why!

I have always loved Harriet but have a one syllable surname beginning with H and one friend says it sounds a bit strange - don't think it does myself but there we are. Also like Hetty/Hatty for Harriet: I like names with options really.
