The name Arthur?

Just a light-hearted question really! DH and I have a 12 week old son called Arthur. When we picked it, we thought it was not particularly common, and were hoping that he'd be the only one in his class etc (not that it matters really, we just thought that it was a fairly uncommon name!). Anyway, since he has been born, I have known of no less than THREE other Arthurs who have been born! (Only to friends of friends, but three is quite a lot!)

Has this name suddenly increased in popularity, or were DH and I naive in thinking that it wasn't particularly popular at the moment?! Do you know many Arthurs?!

As I said, not that it matters, we still love his name, but I just wondered!

I don't know any Arthurs. It's a lovely name however!

intheshed · 04/04/2013 11:43

I know two little Arthurs. I think it might be the new Alfie/Archie - sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear! I do love the name though ( but we already have a Martha so it's never going to happen Grin)

I blame Bradley James Here

I think it's a lovely name. I always secretly wanted to use it,it was my dearly beloved and sadly deceased grandad's name. I have noticed that it suddenly become more popular. That isn't a bad thing though,a couple of years ago it was considered really "out there" and sneered at a bit. Now it is at least a bit more mainstream.

Congratulations on your new baby :)

I know two, both born in London about 9/10 months ago.

CheshireDing · 02/04/2013 20:22

There is 1 Arthur if pfb baby classes and he is built like a shed Grin

It's a cool name.

QOD · 02/04/2013 16:37

2 new baby boys locally, both Arthur

BuggedByJake · 02/04/2013 16:25

I know one aged 5. It's a lovely strong, classic name.

Lionsntigersnbears · 02/04/2013 16:19

I know of only 2 Arthurs, one is 19 one is 2 :-)

JambalayaCodfishPie · 02/04/2013 15:43

I know two, the first surprised me. The second not so much. Think it may have made a teensy leap in the ONS stats this year.

TinyTear · 02/04/2013 15:42

I love Arthur, would have been my choice if I had a boy

Clary · 02/04/2013 12:12

Not that there is anything wrong with Jake/Joe//Josh/Jordan! I just know lots of each Smile

Clary · 02/04/2013 12:12

I know one Arthur well Grin

He is nearly 14 and I believe knows no others and likes the fact that he is the only one in school etc.

There is one in DS2's school, I think maybe about 7yo. Otherwise I don't know any - but I believe it is becomign more popular. It's a great name tho and will never be Josh/Joe/Jordan/Jake so I wouldn't worry.

EarlGreyTeabag · 02/04/2013 02:05

I know two Arthurs.

One is aged 4 and is known as Artie (cute).

The other is my uncle, who is 90 and utterly adorable.

Great name.

SomethingOnce · 02/04/2013 01:59

I know a three-year-old Arthur.

It's probably getting more popular now the memory of the Eastenders character has faded a bit.

olivertheoctopus · 01/04/2013 23:22

I lied, make that 3 of them. Is it not quite high on the official lists these days?

olivertheoctopus · 01/04/2013 23:21

I know of two who are aged 2

tvmum1976 · 01/04/2013 21:08

I know a few baby Arthurs- definitely seems to be increasing in popularity,at least where i live.

Fraggle3112 · 01/04/2013 19:36

My ds is 13 weeks and we have had the same thing, chose the name William knew it was classic but don't know any baby Williams and since he's been born I know of about 4 other baby's born at the same time also called William! I think you just pay more attention and notice it more! Arthur is a lovely name and was on our short list also! :)

YokoUhOh · 01/04/2013 05:08

I know two Arthurs born in the last few months; then again, I also know two Ewans.

anonymosity · 01/04/2013 04:34

I know, there were about a dozen Alfies when I had my DS back in 2006. All I could think was "this is the name for a pet!"

KittenOfDoom · 01/04/2013 01:22

It's been slower to take off than some old-fashioned names of the same generation, which surprises me because I think it has much more class than some. I mean, King Arthur!!!

It also puzzles me that people are favouring Alfie over Alfred. Like, a puppy's name over the only king who is known as The Great. Shocking.

Viviennemary · 01/04/2013 00:16

I haven't heard the name for years apart from somebody's great uncle and all of a sudden there seems to be quite a few of them. But if you like the name does it really matter that much. But I think it's extremely unlikely there is going to be half a dozen other Arthurs in his class!

anonymosity · 01/04/2013 00:13

Good name. I know two Arthurs. One is about 50 and the other about 8.
