Scottish Boy Names

We already have a Harris :) DC2 is due in August so we have lots of time!

Here is our shortlist so far:
Leighton
Ramsay
Campbell
Maxwell

Vetoed names: Innes, Cormack, Lachlan, Forbes, Blair, Cameron.

Are there any other names that we'd like? Keen to have a long list that we can whittle down at a later date!

My list included the following (some are Irish, mixed heritage here) - we've settled on Angus if DC1 is DS1.

Couldn't have Douglas, Alasdair, and a few others. So many lovely names on this thread...

Ooo, I love Strachan. DH is unhappy with Murdo, sadly.

I think we had probably better not choose another island! Not that they'll be said together all that often once tthey're past primary school... But that's often enough for me!

Hector was used in both mediaeval and more modern times in Scotland when never in England. Like Alexander and David.

For a truly Scottish/Highland flavour you want to go all double barrelled - John Angus/Murdo John/Donald Alec/Roddy Alec/Calum Neil/Kenny Dan/Alec Dan/

Seonaidh surely is Gaelic for Johnny, rather than George. Trying to think... George is... um... no can't think. Seonag or Shona would be the female.

Confusingly also, Dolly is common Gaelic man's name, short for Domhnall/Donald.

Not really Scottish, but I think in-keeping with your original list, OP, what about Kennedy? I love that as a name!

Oh, that's a shame weegie. Callum was up there. I'll have a look at the general reg office data and see how popular our shortlist is and the other suggestions.

I lived on Harris for 10 years and only ever met one - he was 80, his twin brother was Lewis.

It's become very popular, but really, having lived on both, don't go for Lewis and Harris!!

Calum/Callum is very popular. I teach mums and babies, in each class of 16 over the last 4 years, there have been 3 - 4 of them.

One of the many issues is that Harris was relatively uncommon when we chose it. Then it had a huge leap in popularity. I'm a bit sad about that, no matter how much it suits DS.

I like Gregor Fergus and Donald. Some of the ones on the OP's list are a little too obscure. Leighton seems like a sur name, and, it might be shortened to Lee.

Seonaidh is Irish for George, but it is very like Shona and I would avoid it.

Sorry, I've never liked the surname/firstname tradition. Not sur Leighton and Maxwell are particularly Scottish, anyway.
