What do we think of Alma?

emmyloo2 · 27/03/2013 02:46

Saw it yesterday on a website about old-fashioned names, with an Australian focus, and my DH really likes it. He also likes Flora. I like both and we also have Florence and now Olive on the list.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Yes, it means 'soul' in Latin and Portuguese. I hadn't heard it before but actually really like both the meaning and the sound. Feminine without being too frilly. Nice.

CruCru · 28/03/2013 10:40

If your surname is three syllable then it's nice. Otherwise I find it a bit brusque.

Wasn't Alfred Hitchcooks wife called Alma?

themammy73 · 27/03/2013 22:53

How about Ailbhe which is pronounced Alva? I loved this name but DH thought it sounded too much like Alma (which he didn't like). The Irish spelling might put you off tho!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/03/2013 19:51

Really dislike it, sorry.

catinboots · 27/03/2013 19:42

It's a pub

scaevola · 27/03/2013 19:40

The Corrie character left the series years ago, and though a long-running character, wasn't one of the really big iconic characters. So probably OK from that angle.

I'd think of the battle, and the station station named after it.

fussychica · 27/03/2013 19:30

Cogan - 50s singer- sorry showing my age.

Ham69 · 27/03/2013 12:53

I don't think it's harsh at all but then i know a RL 5 year old Alma. She's blonde haired, blue eyed and beautiful. Alma hasn't been in Corrie for years and it certainly won't bother the next generation one bit. It's a lovely name and, unlike a few of the suggestions, I doubt it will ever get too popular. It's not made up either so a perfect choice in my opinion!

OBface · 27/03/2013 12:46

Like it but definite Corro tones about it....

elQuintoConyo · 27/03/2013 12:45

One of those names that looks nice written (see other thread) but not so nice spoken. Even if it does mean 'soul' in Latin.
How about Alba?
Hth

AWimbaWay · 27/03/2013 12:44

My Granny's name, the only Alma I've met in real life. My Granny is lovely but means I'd find it strange on a baby. I like it though.

Longdistance · 27/03/2013 12:42

Alma means apple in Hungarian :)

almapudden · 27/03/2013 12:39

I like it Grin.

Reminds me of Ennis' wife in Brokeback Mountain more than anything, actually.

cece · 27/03/2013 12:36

Alma Cogan sings one of my favourite songs from my childhood

WhoKnowsWhereTheChocolateGoes · 27/03/2013 12:35

Alma Sedgewick here too, but that won't matter to her generation. And she was a lovely character.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 27/03/2013 12:30

How about Enid (Welsh) which like Alma means soul?

MarthasHarbour · 27/03/2013 12:17

well i love it - old fashioned but also a bit new

go for it! think-i might nick it if i ever have a girl

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 27/03/2013 12:16

Love it. Makes me think of Alma in Deadwood.

Eskino · 27/03/2013 05:42

Reminds me of the song, Almaz by Randy Crawford.

MrRected · 27/03/2013 05:24

First thing that springs to mind is the Flintstones.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 27/03/2013 04:43

Ooooh no....sorry, hate it.

Reminds me of Mike Balddwin's 80's wife from Coronation Street.

I like Anna though Grin
