Edith or Sylvie

We've been set on Edith for a while bit I'm wavering the more I hear people grumble about it. Not that we've told anyone we like it but they know we like old names and have been guessing/passing comments on what they consider awful Sad
Sylvie we also love but it's very close to my DM's name and our sons name is a variation of DF's name so I don't know if that's a bit silly although unintentional.

Any thoughts.......?

I prefer Edith, although I really like Sylvia ( not Sylvie, sorry).

For those of you liking both, any other suggestions??

Thanks everyone
I've knocked .5 off Sylvie because its close to DM's and knocked 1 off Edith because a: it would bother me that some people consider it child abuse and b: Edie would get confused for Evie so, so far I think Sylvie wins with 9.5/10 Grin

It's such a tricky one though...... Loved Edith for so long

Edith was our name for this baby if a girl. I think it's strong, not common but not out there either. Love nn Edie too.

ThreeMenFromCarntyne · 25/03/2013 22:54

Sylvie is a beautiful, stylish, timeless classic.

Edith is none of those things, sorry.

ElegantSufficiency · 25/03/2013 22:51

Sylvie is a more attractive sound but Edith has a strength about it that I like. And I don't like every strong name. does that make any sense?
I like them both so that 's no help. Ok, I prefer Sylvie. But I like Edith too. Confused

AuntPittypat · 25/03/2013 22:44

I love both. Although Sylvie does sound a bit Americanised to me though (not that that's a bad thing, just maybe a different vibe to what you intended). Love the nickname Edie for Edith.

I love Edith and Sylvie. Especially Sylvie, because that is the name of a girl in Haiti that I sponsor!

I love edith and will use it for my firstborn. even if its a boy.

Vijac · 25/03/2013 21:48

I like Edith and eedie for short best. I love that name (though I am biased as was my nanny's name and is also my friend and teddy's name Blush). But also think it nice to have name close to your mums.

NowPlayingZone · 25/03/2013 21:44

Sylvie- hands down. Sorry, but I too consider Edith to be an unattractive name.

OzmaofOz · 25/03/2013 21:44

Out of the 2, Sylvie. I would have loved love to use Sylvie but have Ds and a lisp so couldn't.

birdofthenorth · 25/03/2013 21:40

Sylvie is lovely and nice to honour your mum with a similar name. Not silly to honour both your parents. Edith is beautiful too, perhaps harder to wear, but lovely.
