Arthur or Stanley?

Which do you prefer? One is my favourite, the other my DHs! Whichever we use, we'd have the other choice as a middle name I think.
Other boy names we like are Edward or Theodore (Ted for short!) or Travis, not as keen on these though :)

I am choosing Arthur for one of my twin boys :) Stanley is my DS1 middles name! (so I am biased) actually prefer Arthur (Artie for short).

JoCheshire10 · 14/03/2013 20:03

Both are my Grandads names and they are very special men so I don't have a favourite and love both names! Smile

Laquila · 14/03/2013 12:14

Both are lovely but I think Stanleys will be more numerous within the years to come. I bloody loved the Flat Stanley books though!

Catballou no offence but how do you know he wouldn't want to be called either of those names?! It's all subjective, and just because you associate them, presumably, with old men, it doesn't mean that association will necessarily be around for long. Names like Alfie, Evie, Matilda, and Freddie all had similar connotations at one point and they're all pretty popular now.

coralanne · 13/03/2013 23:17

In my DHs family, the son always has the Fathers first name as his seocnd name. Consequently my DH has Arthur as his second name. Much nicer than his first name.

MisselthwaiteManor · 13/03/2013 12:25

I like them both but prefer Stanley

Lutrine · 13/03/2013 12:11

Ha ha I had no idea Arthur was Flat Stanley's brother hatsybatsy , that's hilarious! Still looking about 50/50 at the moment from those of you who like them! Thanks for your input everyone! Smile

I'm expecting an Arthur next month Smile For some reason DS aged 10 and DD aged 2.5 won't countenance him being called anything else which poo poos the "ask anyone under 20" comment upthread! I would say old fashioned names are popular with the young and not the middle aged (MIL is 62 and thinks Arthur is awful, but I guess to her generation it's like calling someone Trevor or Clive!).

I do love Stanley too though, and both Edward nn Ted and Travis were on our list! I'm loving your taste OP, even if others are not -it takes all sorts Grin

Willow36 · 13/03/2013 09:53

I'm not a fan of the "old man" names tbh. Classic names are great though. James, William or Thomas would be my choices.

lumpybumps · 13/03/2013 09:51

Wow- some people r being very rude. If you don't like either of the names don't comment or just say you don't like either- no need to be so insulting!

Personally I would go with Alfie, but then I'm biased as I have a little 2 year old Alfie! Out of Stanley and Arthur, I think Arthur is my favourite! Smile

weegiemum · 13/03/2013 09:44

Neither, if you're me! Both ghastly old man names. If you have to, Thomas I'd good!

hatsybatsy · 13/03/2013 09:43

both great names - Stanley is the only name I heard after ds was born that made me wish I'd chosen that instead.....

Think on balance now I'd go for Arthur though - am not sure that I like Stan as a nickname.

Arthur was Flat Stanley's brother - you clearly have the same train of thought as Mr and Mrs Lambchop!

Homebird8 · 13/03/2013 08:36

DF's dad was Stanley, DM's dad was Arthur. I'd go for Arthur. If it gets shortened, and one day it will by someone, Art is nicer than Stan.

Wewereherefirst · 13/03/2013 08:26

I have a Stanley, but love Arthur too.

My now 6 year old wanted him called Treehouse, so Stanley was the better option for us Wink

Lutrine · 13/03/2013 08:23

I teach so can do that easily catballou, I'll ask my form what they think, and see if I get a "miss, are you mad?!" reaction! Mind you, one of them suggested Bertie or Bernie the other day (quite seriously too!)Smile

Look would you please consider the child? He would not want to called Arthur or Stanley. Interview anyone under twenty and ask whether they would mind. No offence but hell's teeth!

Lutrine · 13/03/2013 08:06

GrinYour family have great names coralanne! George is one of my favourites too, but hasn't made it to our shortlist cos its DHs best friends name.

I also have an uncle Alfred (Alf) Grin

coralanne · 13/03/2013 07:53

Stanley George and Arthur Clarence

coralanne · 13/03/2013 07:52

My dear dad is Stanley and FIL is ArthurGrin

Lutrine · 13/03/2013 07:43

Sorry about all the exclamation marks by the way

Thankyou everyone! It's about 50/50 so far, with a few neithers! Looks like we'd be in good company too if we use one of them Smile! My DH has just thrown Alfie /Alfred in too, so we have three great boy names, planning to see which suits the baby/which it feels most natural to call him(if we do have a boy that is!) when they arrive in a few weeks! Will try to remember to let you know which we pick!

Dominodonkey · 12/03/2013 23:26

wow - are you giving birth to a 90 year old? Why oh why? would you do this to a child?

Edward is much better.

jollygoose · 12/03/2013 22:44

stanley - love it

ceeveebee · 12/03/2013 22:44

I love them both. Stanley is my DSs middle name. I couldn't use Arthur as its one of my best friend's name and he would have been freaked out. But love Arthur Stanley.

SanityClause · 12/03/2013 22:36

If DD1 had been a boy, she would've been Edward, but we had gone off it by the time DS was born 5 years later.

The only one one your names I like is Theodore. I like Ted or Teddy as a nickname, and he could also be Theo.
