Pippi

Really love the name Pippi, but would I be setting my child up for a lifetime of long stocking jokes? Since Pippa, Poppy etc are considered useable could Pippi be?

I don't know where you are but where I grew up it was pi pi (pee pee) whereas Pippi rhymes with hippy. You wouldn' say Pippa as Pee Pa.

Pippi would probably be the butt of pee jokes in Wales though

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 20/02/2022 13:38

It’s very close! The Welsh word for wee is pretty much indistinguishable from the way Pippi would be pronounced where I live. Possibly slightly more emphasis and elongation of the second ‘ee’ sound but the first ee is short, making it pretty much the same as Pippi. i in Welsh says ‘ee’, never i as in igloo. I guarantee schoolchildren would think it was the same in any case!!

KirstenBlest · 20/02/2022 13:22

@WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly, they don't. Pippi isn't pronounced pee pee

Blubells · 19/02/2022 06:25

The German word for wee is Pipi, but ts pronounced exactly like Pippi. I'd not want to be named that.

WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly · 18/02/2022 20:24

Not spelt the same. You don't get a double p in Welsh

I know that, I’m a Welsh speaker. It’s pipi. But it sounds the same 🙄

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2022 16:41

@WhenZoomWasJustAnIceLolly

It’s also wee in Welsh. Pronounced pee-pee. It would definitely attract teasing here.

Pippin sounds like a swear word.

FayCarew · 17/02/2022 13:42

There are hundreds off nicer names than that

Hikoridikori · 17/02/2022 08:16

Pippi is the female genitals in my language , pronounced like that (Peeppee)! Grin

I saw the post above about Germany but I am not from there! So, two countries to worry...

AugustusGloop0908 · 15/02/2022 07:37

I know it’s been almost a decade since this thread started, I’m just intrigued to know if you called your baby Pippi in the end and whether she has gone unscathed on the “peepee” angle?

Willow36 · 13/03/2013 14:01

LOVE Phillipa.

Pippi as anything other than a NN? No.

poppydaisy · 13/03/2013 13:51

Pippi is wee in German, pronounced like that (Peeppee).

anonymosity · 13/03/2013 00:48

I would do it, you're not going to come across any other Pippi's ever, really are you. There's something nice about that.

I have only ever met 2 people face-to-face with the same name as me and there was something very peculiar about it, when I did.

Sasparillo · 12/03/2013 23:38

Pippi ...long stockings!? No, stick with Pippa or Poppy xx

Still18atheart · 12/03/2013 17:32

Philippa but then I'm biased.

Most other philippa's i know are Pippa or pip

Think mum called me Philippa thinking that a nn would be given. But it wasn't now I ge annoyed if anyone but really close friends and family called me anything put philippa

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/03/2013 17:32

Some one told me that your name should be chosen so you can collect the bins or work the Large Hadron Collider. I can't see Dr Pippi doing either.

anonymosity · 12/03/2013 17:30

Love it and it was veto'd by my DH for our DD.

NadiaWadia · 12/03/2013 17:14

It's cute, but only as a little girl's nickname. 'All rise for Judge Pippi Smith' no, can't see that happening.

BeeBopDingALing · 11/03/2013 18:50

In that case I would 100% go with Pippa. It's nice for a baby/child/adult. You can always call her Pippi as a pet name but definitely on bc Pippa.

CurlySuePreciousPeach · 11/03/2013 18:44

Yeah I do really like Pippa....I was just trying to be a bit different!
