Inspiration for a girl's name - if I like these what else might I like?

With just 5 weeks to go until our baby girl is due we still don't have a name in mind.

I love Ottilie and Isobel, what else might I like? Can't use Isobel as BF has just pipped me to the post. Can't use Ottilie as it would be shortened to Tilly, which I love but sister has a Lilly and so too similar. Inspiration needed!

We like names that aren't too popular (so actually probably wouldn't have gone with Isobel for that reason) and that can be shortened with a cute NN. Ideas welcome!

I was on another baby name thread today where the mother did not like her ds name. It was not her first choice as a friend/relative pipped her to the post with her favourite name. She could not bring herself to say the name and wanted advise on changing it.

My point being, Ottilie and Isobel are lovely names you like, so use one of them regardless. Tilly and Lily is a non issue and you will not be joined at the hip with bf for ever.

Ottilie is a lovely name.

FWIW - DD2 is called Gabriella and is sometimes shortened to Gabi.

DNiece is called Abigail and is generally shortened to Abi.

When we all get together - not THAT often but several times a year, we have an Abi and a Gabi. Never has a problem with it though.

I would go with Ottilie and shorten it as you wish, if you wish.

I know an Ottilie that's nn is Otty, which I think is quite sweet.

Redwineandcheeseplease · 11/03/2013 17:42

I'm crossing Aurelie off the list, much as I love it I can't get past the 'orally' teasing she might be in for.

Ottilie is back in the running as DH and I both really like and you've made me think perhaps I shouldn't discount it based on niece's name.

Elfine is a great suggestion, thanks pipkin, I love Cold Comfort Farm. I also really like donkey's suggestion of Ophelia, nn Ophy?

All great suggestions, thanks for the much needed inspiration!

I quite like the name Elfine after one of the characters in Cold Comfort Farm.

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick · 11/03/2013 14:55

Oh,do use Ottilie, its such a lovely name Smile

Nicknames's could be Otty,lottie,Otta...

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 11/03/2013 14:09

Tilly and Lily, rather sweet for cousins - in your shoes I wouldn't let my niece's name put me off using Ottilie. Lottie could be a nickname but tbh why rush into shortening what is a lovely name?

As an alternative may I suggest Chloe or let's be daring, Ophelia?

OkayHazel · 11/03/2013 00:26

I loved Aurelie until my very Mancunian sister said it, and all I heard was 'orally'.

Prime teenage teasing material that I just couldn't do to my child!

Christabel

Thanks for all the inspiration!

I love Aurelie and Marnie is really sweet too. Tabitha was on our list until DSiL named her baby that.

Reading through I've realised I'm quite hung up on Ottilie. Maybe we could use a different shortening so it doesn't sound like my niece's name. Lottie perhaps? I know that's short for Charlotte but I guess we can make our own rules up.
