I love this name, but wanted to check how people would pronounce it. What do you think?

Love for both genders

OneLittleToddleTerror · 08/03/2013 18:44

Marmon, we have even more Ariels in my company! It's probably right what is short for in Israel.

Marmom · 08/03/2013 15:31

It's apparently short for Ariel.

Marmon, it's a very common Jewish name for boys. I work for a company with a Israel office, and we have a lot of Aris.

Naoko · 08/03/2013 15:12

I would pronounce Ah-ri, but that's because it's a name in my native language (Dutch, although it'd be spelled Arie) and pronounced like that. Common in Finland as Ari too, I think.

Slothlorien · 08/03/2013 15:08

For a boy or girl?

acrabadabra · 08/03/2013 14:53

Ah ree.

I would think Entourage too blind. Love him.

If you're not into foul mouthed sarcasm probably best to avoid watching OP.

mmmuffins · 08/03/2013 14:38

My first thought was it's Japanese. Pronounced ah ree.

But it looks like it is a name in lots of languages: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ari_(name), just none of them English!

CheeseStrawWars · 08/03/2013 14:32

I'd pronounce it 'Arry', but interested to know that's probably wrong!

ChoccyWoccyDoDa · 08/03/2013 14:31

I would assume short for Arianne?

Zavi · 08/03/2013 14:27

Lovely name I think. Unusual though.

I suspect most people hearing it for the first time would wonder what's it short for - and guess Aristotle...

alwayslateforwork · 08/03/2013 14:25

I know an Ari.

Full name Ariane. No one calls her that. And it's definitely 'are - eeee' for her, although when they say her full name, they say 'arry ann'. Funny old world.

I have two girls with names that are pronounced differently by about 50% of the population. You can't control it.

FunnyBird · 08/03/2013 14:23

It's my niece's nickname. Short for Arianna.

blindworm · 08/03/2013 14:20

I like Ari on a boy. I've only ever heard it as a boys name.

wigglesrock · 08/03/2013 13:53

I would think Entourage Grin and pronounce it as it is in the show.

Marmom · 08/03/2013 13:03

Thanks for all your comments. I actually like the name Ari for a boy. We have no Jewish connections, we just like the name. We heard it from the TV show Entourage.

I have heard it used by Americans and they pronounce it Aw ree, I really like it!
How about Avi, Ami or Asa all lovely also!

KirstyJC · 08/03/2013 11:05

'Arry. Like you mean Harry but dropped the H!Grin

If you want it pronounced Are-ey then maybe another A would emphasise that? Aari?

Fallenangle · 08/03/2013 11:05

Prettier than it sounds -auto correct to blame

ItsallisnowaFeegle · 08/03/2013 11:04

I love it. I pronounced it Ah-ray when I read your title.

Fallenangle · 08/03/2013 11:04

Probably Ari. Could be confusion when she is referred to with people thinking its Harry with the h dropped. I think the name looks pretty than it sounds. How would you pronounce it?

Yannah2006 · 08/03/2013 11:01

I love Ari (Ah-ree) for a boy. I rather like the pronunciation 'Arry' too, but i'm a Game of Thrones fan.

The only Ari i've heard of (as in not a baby name book) is from a cracking film called The Royal Tenenbaums. It was a pair of brothers called Ari and Uzi.

dolomitesdonkey even if they're not Jewish, i don't think it'd matter! Not everyone in England chooses English names.

NotADragonOfSoup · 08/03/2013 11:00

Seeing it written down, I'd think Arry.

BeeBopDingALing · 08/03/2013 10:55

Sorry Telsa misread your post - Baby brain!

BeeBopDingALing · 08/03/2013 10:54

Family member (girl) is called this. Pronounced Arry, like Harry with no H. Lovely name.
Telsa, Ari-Up was Johnny Rottens step daughter :) The name also reminds me of her whenever I hear it.
