Boys names which can't be shortened. Help!

Really struggling to come up with a name for DS2 (due in a few weeks)
I like slightly older names, as does DH. But I've got a real thing about people shortening names! DS1 is Harry and there are a few people we know who insist on shortening it to Har it drives me mad! So we're after a similar name for DS2.
Any suggestions welcome Wink

My parents chose me a name that they thought couldn't be shortened. It didn't work.

You are cursed anyway you look at it. Choose a one sylable name (Sam) and people will lengthen it (Sammy, Sammo). Choose a longer one and it will be shortened. I think best to go with a longer name that you like the shortened versions of and call him that. IE named James but called Jamie, names Thomas but called Tom.

And the fact remains, it's not your name- it's his. And he will have his own relationship with his friends and family, and, as soon as he can talk, can do whatever he likes with his name.

Agree with almond, think if you want you can shorten any name. I have a jude, thankfully nobody shorten's his name!

I don't like people shortening names. All my kids were given names I thought wouldn't be shortened. DD1's name (4 letters) started getting lengthened as soon as she and her nursery friends could speak. Both grandmother's lengthen it as well (in different ways). DD2's name (5 letters) gets lengthened by my mother, who really should know better because she spent my childhood complaining about people shortening her children's names. DD2 messes about with DS's name all the time but hasn't settled on her favourite version yet.

TBH I don't mind the kids' friends doing it, or the grandparents because that's about their own relationship with the child. I was more worried about the random aquaintance who would insist on using a short form that I didn't like. And we seem to have avoided that thankfully.

I agree with those who said it could still be mucked with and lengthened, even if it is hard to shorten. My dh is John, but is called Johnny for example. Someone earlier in the thread mentioned they have a Jude and it isn't shortened - I have one too and we often lengthen it to Judo. My other ds is Alexander and was supposed to be an Alex, but we call him Alexi. You can't really predict what will happen with names - either what you will do yourself, or what your ds/his friends will do. I would just choose something you like and stop worrying about what it could be changed to.

DH knows someone who called her daughter Eve for this reason.

She now gets called Evs.

As I said, you only get any control at all for 2 years of his life, so choose a name you like and don't worry about it!

I really struggled with names before Kaden was born. I wanted something that sounded a bit different and even considered Jax, Xavier, Marty and Luca but I'm glad I went with what I did because I think Kaden is a lovely name and he likes it too...I think!

Tim - most of the 3 letter ones seem to get Y stuck on the end as a diminutive.

Not read whole thread, but as others have said even short names get changed. My ds is called troy. Never gets shortened but people do lengthen it to troyston. And he's nut even in school yet.

Dylan will be shortened to Dyl (and do you really want him to be called "dull"?)

I have a Rhys and a Sion. They don't get shortened but Sion does get called Sioni.
