Florence, Maude, Mabel or Iris?

Ok, I have been back and forth on names for girls. This is my latest list. Not endorsed by DH although he has agreed that Florence and Mabel can be on the list. DS is George so I want it to have the same old-fashioned feel as George.

I know old-fashioned, granny names are not to everyone's taste but it is definitely my taste, so I would be grateful for your views on the names above. None are popular where I live. Maude and Mabel would raise eyebrows I suspect but this doesn't bother me in the slightest. Surname starts with "S" and so I think Iris might be tricky and Florence may also not flow as well. If I had my way, I would go with Maude but DH is currently saying no to this one although I am working on him.

Thanks!

Thanks all. Love the suggestions of Martha and Audrey. Audrey would be on the top of my list being my grandmother's name except DH has vetoed it. He also said no to Martha. I can't decide whether I prefer Maude or Mabel but think I am going to struggle with getting DH on board with Maude whereas Mabel seems like a possibility. Florence is a definite yes from him but again I have concerns with the surname.

I laughed out aloud at Fanny! I would love someone just to call their daughter Fanny. Now that would take guts!

my favourite is Maude. always reminds me of the poem.

i prefer Marta to Martha. i don't really like Florence or Mabel. I do like Iris, but it is quite popular, which i don't think matters if you absolutely love the name.

WhiteHairReally · 28/02/2013 21:29

Love Maud. The child we didn't have would have been called Maud. Maudie is both sweet and feisty at the same time, and there aren't many around. Good Luck persuading your DH to be a little adventurous in the world of names.

forgetmenots · 28/02/2013 20:22

Can I suggest Martha? Lots of Marthas shortened to Maud 'back in the day'...

Out of these though I love Iris. Love Violet and Betsy too.

Clary · 28/02/2013 00:40

Oooh I always loved Mabel, DH vetoed it tho.

Florence was one of DS2's names if he had been a girl. (his middle names is George!)

I like Maude too tho it's a bit short with some surnames (Maud Smith hmmm)

Iris is more popular and I like it the least of yr list.

Other options: Agnes, Elsie, Edith, Constance, Verity, Cecilia?

LOL @ giving birth to a grandma Grin, me too btw, my DD's name features on this thread

Ultimate old lady name... Fanny

Gimmeechocolate · 27/02/2013 23:32

Oh and DD3 ( if indeed it is a girl!) would have been Elsie but my brother got there first so now have a gorgeous niece called Elsie :)

Gimmeechocolate · 27/02/2013 23:31

I have an Iris and Mabel is our current favourite for DD3 so LOVE them! I also really like Florence and Maude but we know three or four Florence's already and DH has also vetoed Maude on the grounds that it sounds too much like mould :( DD2 is Hetty and I also love Ethel, Lilliah, Ada and Violet.

bridgetsmum · 27/02/2013 23:23

I love Florence, but probably cos we went there on honeymoon and its so beautifulSmile
I also quite like Maude

birdofthenorth · 27/02/2013 23:21

Brilliant list! Love Mabel, Maude & Iris, in that order. Less keen on Florence which always seems a little cooler to me. DD is Bess and had this one been a girl would probably have been Audrey, if that's up the same street. Friends have Edith, Ada, Cora and Elsie, on a similar vein.

AgnesBligg · 27/02/2013 23:18

hatsybatsy · 27/02/2013 09:22

friend has an etta who is just etta - think it does stand up quite well in its own right?

love all your names by the way.. am wondering whether hattie (harriet), connie (constance) and annabel might suit you?

telsa · 27/02/2013 09:19

Mabel is lovely. Etta gets used as a name on its own, but could be a nn for Henrietta, Georgette, Marietta, Claudette, Rosetta, Violetta, Loretta.
Betsy is really lovely.

ceramicunicorn · 27/02/2013 09:11

My favourite is Maude too.

How about Winifred, Ursula, Flora, Ethel
