I think it's a very ugly name.

Sorry.

Hedwig3 · 01/03/2013 21:29

I think that people think of spiders because Ariadne has been used as the name for spider characters in childrens stories for years.

This may be why some wrinkle their noses but don't know why.

I am one of those people as I am a teacher so I come across it a lot in old and new books.

TenthMuse · 27/02/2013 20:54

It is a beautiful name. However, I'd also also bear in mind that it's a bit of a 'statement name' that wouldn't allow the carrier to blend into the background. I went to school with an Ariadne who (at the time) was plain, geeky and very overweight. Used to feel terribly sorry for her, because her classmates would snigger behind her back about her name (not the name itself, really, but the contrast between the image it conjured up and the reality of the girl herself). Oh, and I think of spiders too, but that wouldn't put me off!

It would need a shorter, simpler middle name, I think. Something like:
Ariadne Kate
Ariadne Tess

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 27/02/2013 15:28

Ariadne Clio sounds pretty, (blatantly steals from ImpYCelyn).

ImpYCelyn · 27/02/2013 15:25

DH's veto was based on spiders. I was all "no dear, that's Arachne" with him and got told it's because to him (a frog) it sounds too much like "araignée". So that was me told.

I still think he's wrong.

Not that I've been stewing on this for the last 3 years, oh no.

And then he vetoed Calliope and Clio second time round Angry

alexpolismum · 26/02/2013 21:48

yes. Still in Greece, although I'm not sure if it was a wise decision. I found a contract that kept me employed for a while, and I thought I'd give it more time. That's run out now, so if dh's job doesn't go well, we will relocate to UK. Sad

weather??

alexpolismum · 26/02/2013 21:46

you could always adopt half a dozen baby girls, Getorf!

GetOrf · 26/02/2013 21:45

Are you still in Greece alexpolis? Sorry to be nosy, just remember your very saddening posts from some time ago amongstj all the crises. I also hope you haven't suffered too much in the weather of you're still there.

GetOrf · 26/02/2013 21:44

Ooh Ismene

What a lovely pair of names.

alexpolismum · 26/02/2013 21:41

I already have an Ariadne. My next dc was going to be Ismene, but it turned out to be a boy. I'm still saving the name, just in case we have a surprise in the future!

GetOrf · 26/02/2013 21:35

That's it! Theseus. Thank you.

I love the name Ariadne. It really is so lovely.

I would love a load of daughters so I could call them all classical Greek names. Artemis, Oenone, Hera, Athene.

alexpolismum · 26/02/2013 21:31

yes, Getorf, Ariadne was the one who gave Theseus a ball of string in the labyrinth

alexpolismum · 26/02/2013 21:30

To the spider people - you are thinking of arachne, which means spider in Greek.

Ariadne is a beautiful name. I love it! So much so, in fact, that I gave it to my dd!

It means "the most pure"

GetOrf · 26/02/2013 21:29

Arachne was the girl in Greek mythology who gave her name to spiders.

Wasn't Ariadne hidden in the minotaur's cave.

Anyway bores everyone to death I LOVE the name. It is absolutely beautiful.

I know a polish girl called Zaphia, which I think is beautiful as well.

Rhubarbgarden · 26/02/2013 21:25

Spiders here too.

olivertheoctopus · 26/02/2013 20:30

Pretty name. Makes me think of spiders though...

ImpYCelyn · 26/02/2013 20:26

Love it! It was vetoed by DH, but then we had boys anyway. Still love it though...

Nice, but unusal. Go with it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/02/2013 19:36

LOVE it.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 26/02/2013 11:35

Bold choice, pretty and striking.

ChompieMum · 26/02/2013 07:00

Beautiful. And sounds like it is very well suited to your family so a double bonus. Rose is a good middle name with Ariadne

scaevola · 26/02/2013 06:44

I think it's a wonderful name.

Sadly, could not convince DH the same.

laptopwieldingharpy · 26/02/2013 04:43

Beautiful!

SilentMammoth · 26/02/2013 04:19

Talking about fate with baby names, was at park with dc and commented on the lady next to me gorgeous new baby (we were ttc, but was to early to test at time)

She said, "his name is Jago", I said, oh, lovely. She then went on to say "but if he'd been a girl he would have been

I got goose pimples. It was the name that dh and I had picked out for what we hoped would be our next child if a girl. Ten days later I discover I am indeed pregnant again. Nine months later we named our daughter that name.
