Cara or Kara

I prefer Cara but DP likes Kara.

Part of me wants to use Kara to go against the grain of MIL as she has not shut up how its a family thing as all of her DC's will have a child with initials CLB (totally unintentional I might add) so K would be breaking that apparently Hmm

I realise that sounds totally pathetic but she is quite an over powering character who would literally introduce the baby with this bizarre anecdote for the rest of her life and I've had enough of that from DS (he shares her birthday) and this is brought up constantly!

So am I being rediculously hormonal by consideting the spelling I'm not overly keen on just to shut MIL up? :o

I'm a Kara I've always preferred it to cara

stickygotstuck · 23/02/2013 22:32

Can I poit out that, although it does mean 'expensive' in Spanish, it also means 'dear'. OK, it's not its first, immediately obvious meaning, but it's exactly the same as 'dear' and 'expensive' in English. Theay are related concepts but different nuances. Expensive as 'held in high esteem' (ie dear), so similar to the Italian meaning (and the Irish one reported here!).

Not that this matters if you aren't planning on living in Spain anyway! But just saying, in case that one fact puts you off.

Sashapineapple · 23/02/2013 21:30

or means expensive in Spanish, because of the pronunciation they unrecognisable as the same word though.

discrete · 23/02/2013 21:22

Kara for me, because Cara means face in Spanish and that feels a bit weird to me as a name.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 23/02/2013 21:22

I have a Cara. My nn may explain why I didn't go for Kara Grin
Cara also means love in Italian and expensive or face in Spanish. And it is also a type of potato!

VBisme · 23/02/2013 21:22

Cara is a lovely name (Kara is a made up name)

glenthebattleostrich · 23/02/2013 21:20

I have a Cara, it is a gorgeous name. We picked it because out of our shortlist it wasn't one we heard before in our local area, so stop putting it on your shortlists, it is mine. All mine Grin

ludog · 23/02/2013 21:17

Cara, but I'm biased as I have a Cara Elizabeth.

Sashapineapple · 22/02/2013 18:54

I like Cara better. Also get the MIL thing, it would annoy me. I would change the middle name if you are just doing it because DS has DP's name. Just pick a middle name you love, the connection is that you picked it especially for her, and that would mean more imo.

Rhubarbgarden · 22/02/2013 14:20

Kara. Since it's been pointed out that it's from Norse mythology.

SW1XMother · 22/02/2013 11:27

Cara.

When I was 16 I knew siblings called Niclas and Alexandra. Both were horse riders and their parents had a shop called Nicalex.

I always wanted a daughter called Cara Alexandra to get a Caralex. I know, I know... Hmm

DavenotChas · 21/02/2013 20:02

My Niece is Kara Louise and she's the business. Just saying.....

tallulah · 21/02/2013 16:59

Kara is a brand of coconut milk Grin

Bakingtins · 21/02/2013 16:47

Cara

squoosh · 21/02/2013 16:26

Cara means 'friend' in Irish. Definitely C.

MyHeadWasInTheSandNowNot · 21/02/2013 16:20

Do you have a middle name? Does it mean anything to you?

Do you have any other family names that mean something to you - Mum, Gran etc

Do you want your name in there more or less than you want your MIL banging on about the initials?

I think it's nice your DS has your DP's name, as his middle name, as in generations before him (as a middle name is close enough!).

peanutMD · 21/02/2013 16:18

I am liking the random silent letter idea :o

SandStorm · 21/02/2013 16:17

Why not give her an extra middle name so her initials are CLX Surname?

amck5700 · 21/02/2013 16:15

It is lovely, if you want to put a spanner in the works then have Elouise, or spell Louise with a silent P at the beginning :o

peanutMD · 21/02/2013 16:11

Okay I'm convinced Cara for definate.

Middle name was going to be Louise as its my middle name and DS has DP's (I was young and MIL moaned for months that DS' name should be DP's along with 5 generations before) but neither of us were keen so compramised to shut her up keep her happy.

I just want to bring a bit of my side into the name (again daft I know) and think Cara Louise is lovely :)

Kara is a Valkyrie in Norse mythology, btw.

amck5700 · 21/02/2013 16:07

....and I don't mind K names :) just prefer it with a C

amck5700 · 21/02/2013 16:07

Cara - don't worry about the anecdotes, she has to die sometime :o

CheeseStrawWars · 21/02/2013 16:06

Mumsnet doesn't like K names...

eachtigertires · 21/02/2013 16:06

I prefer Kara but that's because it is the name of someone who was very good to me.
