Luna Violet....Too far out or manageable?

Hello!
We decided tonight that we both love the name Luna. We think it is beautiful. It means moon but is also associated with magic and madness which is an idea we think is very cool ha.
Possibly will team it with Violet as a middle name as this was initially top of our girls list.
Keeping names and gender(once we find out in two weeks) a secret so can't ask for friends opinions so what do you guys think?
I myself have an unusual name (first middle and maiden name) and usually suffered from awkward spelling and mispronunciation due to this, tended to be known by a nickname til my mid teens. However this shouldn't be an issue with Luna as its pretty straightforward. Plus I now love my name and appreciate the fact I know nobody else with it, and never have!
So opinions please on Luna possibly followed by Violet. Mental or quirky?
Thanks!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

In RL everyone has been very positive, not that it matters to me.

I think loads of names invite ridicule, I am Louise. Louise please give me some cheese. Lou-weees, squeezy louiseee. Just saying even the most mundane name can get teased. Depends on the character of the child on how they handle it. I think my children will have strong characters and name calling will bother them very little Grin

Sashapineapple · 20/02/2013 19:03

My DH just got home and I asked him about the name Luna and he loves it too. Really cool and beautiful, go for it. I really don't think it's the sort of name that kids will poke fun at, more people would remark on what a lovely unusual name it is iyswim.

Viviennemary · 20/02/2013 18:56

I apologise. But please do not take what I said as being rude or nasty. But you do have to consider implications of the name. I didn't think that was being rude. I am only saying the risk of name calling at school with such a name. It is a reality which must be taken on board.

Welly558 · 20/02/2013 18:50

Ok, VivienneMary, thats another entirely unhelpful comment. You dislike it. Invited and constructive comment.
To further your comment with the words 'dreadful', refer to it as saddling and saying there is no point is entirely unecessary, rude and is quite frankly, shocking me that from the comfort of people's computers they feel they can be so vile.
On this subject, there are lots of threads asking about names I dislike. The rule I work to is that if I dislike it and can say nicely that its not for me and perhaps even offer a similar alternative, I may comment. Otherwise, if I have nothing nice or constructive to say, say nothing at all.
If I ask for an opinion, I expect a polite opinion. I don't want people to only comment if they like the name. But consider this more of a poll. Perhaps that should have been made clear. A simple 'Yay or Nay' will suffice.
End of discussion ladies. Thank you to those who have had a constructive and helpful input, be it positive or negative.

Violet is a lovely name. But Luna. It's just dreadful. The teasing at school will be awful. Why saddle a child with a name like this. there is just no point.

Welly558 · 20/02/2013 18:32

Wheyhey nilbyname, finally someone who can tell me how it works in the real world! We love it =) And thats it, they can change it should they wish. How do you find the reaction of others to the name?

I have a Luna! We love it, she has 2 very traditional classic middle names, should she feel the desire to switch them when she becomes a QC Grin.

I like Luna Violet.

Welly558 · 20/02/2013 18:21

Thanks ineedtochange. Its very pretty we think. First name DH's eyes have lit up at. I love Parma Violets....yum yum! They could always call themselves Lou if they hugely objected too.

I would, but I'm 20 weeks pregnant... Hence the brain fug. Thanks though!

Welly558 · 20/02/2013 18:18

Ah poor you SpecialKnickers =( Grab a bottle yourself!
No we've had one comment of Violent Looney which has tickled me something silly!

First thought was Parma Violet but I love Luna Violet

Welly558 · 20/02/2013 18:17

I'm not injecting my baby with crack. That would make me a bad mother, inflicting something truly heinous on them. (Neither am I calling them Fanny which is blatantly and only ever a vagina.) A name is a name. You grow with it, you can change it should you wish. We wanted to get the general consensus from here which has actually been positive-hurrah! So we're definitely going with it. I just wanted to make sure that the possible variations aren't too unkind. And they aren't. They're light-hearted and nothing we wouldn't use at home as a nickname. I call my nieces loons all the time! Because they're bat shit crazy for the most part but they find it hilarious =) For a start its a great word to say!
Ha no FairyJen, didn't think you were being nasty at all. Its amused me that one. I like Luna Rose. Will see what DH says.
Thanks for the input!

I think it might just be me, but when I see those two names together, I transpose them and misread as "violent lunatic". I am a bit knackered though and dh has just called up to say that he's not going to get home to do bedtime so maybe that's a factor...

BackforGood · 20/02/2013 18:03

The point is, you might not be bothered at the idea of being named 'Looney', but your child might. Why do that to her ?
You are right, children often find things to twist and change that you might not have thought of, but you have now had this pointed out to you, so why would you want to give your daughter this name to carry around for the next 90 years, when there are hundreds of names out there that wouldn't so obviously lend themselves to such a nickname?

ZolaBuddleia · 20/02/2013 17:55

Love Ezra and Jonah.

FairyJen · 20/02/2013 17:53

Glad you appreciated violent loony btw I wasn't trying to be nasty! Grin

FairyJen · 20/02/2013 17:52

Luna rose?

Welly558 · 20/02/2013 17:50

Thats interesting zingally. I hadn't thought of it as being harsh sounding before. My main concern for Violet was that it would be shortened to Lettie which I really dislike. Again, something to think about.
If not Violet, what names do people suggest as a middle name instead? I think I'm sort of stuck now ha!

Hahaha I love Violent Looney =) Thats marvellous! Perhaps I'm just not that bothered about things that other people find offensive. Or maybe, I am more impressed with all you guys imaginative connotations. People around here aren't that imaginative, as lovely as our area is.
I think the reason I can get over it is because I have an usual name. I have several unusal names. And whilst I went with a nickname for a few years in my teens, it was mainly due to spelling confusion and mispronunciation, I would always introduce myself as 'I'm full name but most people call me nickname'. My real name now is what everyone calls me and I hate people still using my NN. It could have been ridiculed and twisted to fit some childish joke, as most names can, but it never was. Never ever. I don't think its a non serious name though. I think it could sound quite strong depending on the character.
Thanks for the input though. They prepare us. x

I love Luna, but Violet does nothing for me. It's a very... harsh sounding name.

FairyJen · 20/02/2013 17:33

Sorry but I just switched them round in my head violet Luna = violent loony??

You think it's nice and it is. BUT your child will NOT think its nice not at all when they hit school or when she is an adult and wants to be taken seriously.

Sorry

Welly558 · 20/02/2013 17:25

Thank you MoppingMummy. I think I shall =)

I love Luna and love Ezra!

Go for it!

Welly558 · 20/02/2013 13:05

Don't worry. I don't think it's rude to offer me your opinion. That's what I want! I was just saying in my previous rant, there's no need for people to be utterly vile. It's definitely a name that is marmite.
In spain they do that? excellent. Yeah I think we'll only use DHs surname on a daily basis and have the other used for official documents. That's what I chose to do when I married which I think my dad(father of two married daughters) appreciated. Switching it is a good idea if we chicken out!
Willow is very pretty. I love nature names too. Although Luna never appeared on our list initially. Oddly enough they were all older names.
I think boys names, it'll be Dexter or Ezra.
Ha a nightclub! That's hilarious!

I like both names but as some have already sugested not keen on them together.....but how often do you say both together anyway!

One of our weims is called Luna. If it wasnt for her it would be dd3s name if i had got it past dhGrin.

I love your boys names Dexter and Ezra best. Have you thought about Elijah? I love this name but Dd1 is Elizabeth and sometimes goes by Eliza(family only) so we cant use itSad.
