Um, is it common to think "condom" when you hear "Johnny"?

We are toying with the name Jonathan. Possible nicknames would be Jonty or Jonny. DH is paranoid people thing of condoms when they hear Johnny. Is he right?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

No.
DS1 is 15 and knows a couple of Johnnys and as far as I know no one's ever made a condom association.

Norem · 07/02/2013 21:13

No, I know a johnny who is now 4 and it never occurred to me, lovely name :)

Rubber Jonnie was definitely a major condom term to my generation (and it's the first think I think of). It's a well enough known term that it is likely to continue to impinge -across generations, even though it's less current. Though it's still and more widely used in the US these days.

yes sorry.

But if you name your DS Jonathan he will generally be known as "Jon" unless he always introduces himself as "Jonty". Every Jonathan I know is known as "Jon" generally and every Jonathan's mother doesn't like it... Wink

HecateWhoopass · 07/02/2013 21:08

Yes, I do.

I don't think it's a particularly common word for them now though, so probably the kids he'll grow up with won't think of it.

Where do you live Svrider?

I'm v disappointed so many are saying yes. I know not everyone shortens names but I do so I need a good short version of Jonathan for when he's a baby. Sigh.

Hmm...nope, know a Johnny never occurred to me to associate his name with condom.

derektheladyhamster · 07/02/2013 20:53

I have a Jonathan, he's not known as Jonny, he's still Jonathan at the age of 13. All the Jonathan's I knew growing up are Jons now.

Svrider · 07/02/2013 20:49

Yes sorry
Rubber jonny is the more common word than condom round here

selsigfach · 07/02/2013 20:46

Yes. I knew a Jonny at uni who went by "Rubber".

LaurieFairyCake · 07/02/2013 20:45

Nope.

Maternitygold · 07/02/2013 20:44

Jonathan is a nice name ... People may just call him that. I wouldn't do the association mentioned in your post.

ladymia · 07/02/2013 20:42

Not me, I have a friend with the name Johnny and never thought that.

Although I think Jonathan is a lovely name and not sure why you would not just call him that if that is his name.
