Ok our daughter will be born in a couple weeks and we're struggling for a name.
My fat lazy husband doesnt like Alice (which I love) because our niece (same surname) is called Alyssa. Fair enough point perhaps...

So give me some clues. I prefer "normal" names, none of this Lily-Rosie or Gracie-Mae double barrelled trendy gash, just give me a nice normal name that isnt too old fashioned her schoolfriends will be taking the piss but not too cutesy that at age 65 she sounds like a sideshow act.

Suggestions ladies please...

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yeah was also thinking Hannah. Very cute and wont get too old when she does.. Timeless..

The husband likes really old woman names like Edna and Susan and shit. He really doesnt have a clue. At one point he suggested Lisa, but quickly changed his mind believing this to be "too hip".

Yeah bitchez, its 2013 and he said "hip".

Dh vetoed several names based on 80's rock songs or films. Not convinced the cultural reference would register but there we go.

Not heard Emma for ages and really like it. Like tess too.

I drew up endless name lists for all our children, several a bit driven by hormones rather than taste. We ended up with names that a lot of people would say are classic and traditional. Others would probably say boring. I love them. They aren't trendy, they don't scream a given decade, can go anywhere and have various nicknames.

I see a lot of the more unusual names I fell in love with becoming popular, and then losing popularity and am so glad we went for the names we did.

Men are awkward shits. I still haven't really got DH off Douglas for a boy. I would rather leave him then have a son called Douglas Grin

Just nod and smile at his suggestions and say you need to meet the baby before deciding and then, when you've just been through labour and he is amazed by and in awe of you, say you really, really think she looks like an Alice.

Call her Alice, it's a great name

I wanted to call DD2 Verity. DH wouldn't let me, the bastard. I haven't forgiven him. So we called her...Alice :)

Millie?

AntimonySalts · 24/01/2013 21:57

I think you should call her Alice. It is not the same as Alyssa. Give your child a name you really, really love. I did, and it still delights me now!

benheldy · 24/01/2013 21:54

I want to call her Alice :(

Men are awkward shits.

Iris is really nice, I like that. Instead of Alice you could have Alex? (Alexandra, Alexandria, Alexia etc). Emma, Beatrice, Jessica, Hannah, Emily, Madeleine, Rebecca - all nice normal names.

Is there anything you can give us a steer with? Any names you like?

ThreeBeeOneGee · 24/01/2013 21:50

Lucy, Elizabeth, Sarah, Naomi, Hannah, Emma, Jessica, Amelia, Rachel, Isobel.

benheldy · 24/01/2013 21:47

My husband loves the name Iris. But I'm slightly put off by the fact that this is because it reminds him of the 12 year old prostitute in Taxi Driver.
