Gilbert (Gill/Gillie) for short

I came across this name and really love it, especially with the Gillie for short (in Scottish means 'keeper of rivers' or something like that) My husband is Scottish and we have an Archie, and a Harry, our surname also starts with a G and would flow really well. What does anyone else think?

Ghillie is a gamekeeper on estates and works also looks after the rivers. I'm also thinking of shortening to Bertie, if he doenst look like a Ghillie/Gil

Gil with one l is lovely and I like Gilbert too.

bluer · 19/01/2013 10:57

Gilmour?

ErikNorseman · 19/01/2013 09:36

Don't like Gilbert but I like Gil. If ghillie is an actual name then I'd go for that. I thought it was a type of gamekeeper.

MidnightMasquerader · 19/01/2013 09:18

My first thought was Blythe, too. Grin

Indith · 19/01/2013 09:00

Gilbert is lovely.

My ds1's middle name is Gilbert, as is my baby cousin's. Both named for my grandfather who was an amazing man who sadly died for too soon.

I toyed with it as a first name but it wasn't quite right for him. I love it though.

Ninjacat · 19/01/2013 08:50

I love Gil
It's top of my boys list.
Can also be short for Gilon but think I would just go Gil.
Reminds me of To Kill A Mocking Bird. Also Gil Scott Herron

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/01/2013 22:22

Like Gil but not Gilbert (but can't think of anything else for Gil!). Don't like Gillie.

RillaBlythe · 18/01/2013 21:08

Gilbert is great Wink

hawkmcqueen · 18/01/2013 21:05

Love it, it's cool.

Nivet · 18/01/2013 20:09

I used to work for a Gilbert, very successful but a foul temper. He was known as Gil (but we used to call him Bertie Bag On behind his back).

Love the name Gil & Gilbert though.

Have to be honest I'm not keen on Elliot, it's a bit weak.

LesBOFerables · 18/01/2013 20:06

Oh, and I'd definitely spell the shortened version Gil. Or he'll get called Jill.

LesBOFerables · 18/01/2013 20:04

I will always love Gilbert Blythe Grin

dashoflime · 18/01/2013 20:04

Gibbie! Like wing commander Guy "Gibbie" Gibson in the damnbusters?! Very cool.

derekthehamster · 18/01/2013 20:02

Oh I automatically thought of Anne of green gables too. Shock at Gilbert Blythe!

Lovely name.

OhBuggerandArse · 18/01/2013 19:59

Traditional nickname for Gilbert is Gibbie.

I like it, but I can see that others might have Issues...

dashoflime · 18/01/2013 19:58

Lke it. I prefer Gil to Ghillie or Gillie though.

rubytutu · 18/01/2013 19:57

A child in dd1's swimming class has a brother called Gilbert, they call him Gil. I saw a class list one day and realised their surname is Blythe!

BanghamTheDirtyScone · 18/01/2013 19:56

Gilbert is great Smile

amazingmumof6 · 18/01/2013 19:55

Ghillie reminds me of ghilie-suits (special army camouflage clothes), but unless a lot of people watch CSI or in the military it probably doesn't matter

and you might get some (older) generation start going on about Gilbert and Sullivan

but yes, I like it!

MarmaladeSkies · 18/01/2013 19:50

I don't like it at all.Gilbert is a very unattractive name imho. There is something nice about Ghillie though.

Katydive · 18/01/2013 19:17

Thanks for that, Ghillie is lovely. Yes I didn't think about the Gill/Jill sound of the girls name association, Gil it is
