boys names for cool boys?

DH and I are totally stuck- he thinks my choices are boring (Henry, Barnaby, Max) but his choices are too out there for me (Milo, Jobie, Amos). We've agreed we want a name that shows a bit of spark and individuality, but we need a middle ground! Thoughts?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

And yes, of course it is a person and their personality that determines coolness, not their name. But a cool person can therefore make an underused name cool. Hope that makes sense.

Lebkuchenlover · 16/01/2013 11:37

"A cool kid makes their name cool, unless they have a really normal boring name like Matthew or James, in which case they can still bew cool but their name won't stand out as part of their coolness."

I completely agree with this. As we don't tend to have so many associations with underused names, any new person has his/her chance to make a new impression on us. I know some cool teenagers called Orlando, Xander and Quentin. The cool boys called Alex, Matt or James are still cool but their names are too ubiquitious to add to their coolness imo.

Rex??? Milo is quite common where I live. Jonah? Theo? Love Kit too.

atthewelles · 16/01/2013 10:40

How do you know your little boy is going to be 'cool'?

LittleAbruzzenBear · 16/01/2013 07:52

I agree that it's the child that makes the name cool, not the other way round. DS1 (reception age) is called Alfie and the boys, girls and teachers love him. He already has his own style and loves rock music. That's all down to him, rather than us though IFYSWIM. We know another Alfie, complete opposite. We also know a very whiny Max and a Finn (who is nasty and mean, not cool, down to his parents though). Def down to the child, or parents, rather than the name.

Anni37 · 15/01/2013 23:13

How about Rhys? Sooo cool. But I think that's because I liked the guy out of terminator 1

pigletpower · 15/01/2013 23:02

Dexter.Ours is 7 and very cool.

GotAnyGrapes · 15/01/2013 22:25

The little boys I know whose names seem cool are Stan and johnny!
I have also meg a Ziggy! Not in London though; at a childrens birthday party in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

thegreylady · 15/01/2013 22:03

Bearcrumble · 15/01/2013 22:02

Or Lembit?

Bearcrumble · 15/01/2013 22:01

Have you thought of Barry?

Assajjventress · 15/01/2013 21:44

Can you be a cool 5 year old?

BeaLola · 15/01/2013 21:40

OP I love all your choices & really dislike your DH choices.

I agree its the child that is cool not the name & with a poster who said they can be in & out of coolness.

From names mentioned above I love Seth - went to college with a hippy Seth & many years later met a seriously gorgeous man at a wedding called Seth , that said cannot imagine cuddling my lovely son & calling him Seth.

Love Ted & Barnaby & Rory & Gray & Dexter for coolnesss......... however the boy, the child, the man will make it cool or not regardless of his name - I think Bryan Ferry is pretty chilled & cool for an oldie & he is called Bryan ! Equally met a very lovely looking boy at a friends childs party recently called Rocco & he was a whingey & challenging 5 year old.

TameGaloot · 15/01/2013 21:21

I think cool people make their names seem cool
Probably one of the reasons why we form opinions on names

orangepudding · 15/01/2013 21:20

Wasn't a park in London.

Assajjventress · 15/01/2013 21:14

What we think is cool will not be amongst kids. Name mentioned before Cornelius mmmm doesn't seem like a cool name the kid would have to be uber cool to carry that one off.

katiecubs · 15/01/2013 21:03

Jobie - noooooo. He will get the poo connection and it won't be nice.

I like Felix, Rory, Kit, Zack, Seth, Milo, Barnaby. All cool and not too popular.

marriedinwhite · 15/01/2013 20:59

Why's that bizarre? I know an uber cool Tom, James and Will and a very uncool Hugo.

Assajjventress · 15/01/2013 20:58

Names can conjure up an image so yes to me names like Dan, Leo, Tom, Alex seem cool but a name cannot make an individual cool. But then what is cool????

kilmuir · 15/01/2013 20:48

giving a child a perceived 'cool' name will not make them cool. how bizarre

Assajjventress · 15/01/2013 20:44

Agree it's the person that can make the name seem cool but it would also depend on the area the child is growing up/school they attend on whether they sound cool.

I really like -

Milo
Ludo
Xavier
Gabriel
Jasper
Felix

We have a Sander and a Rocco and I hope they are cool kids in the playground for at least a little while in their school careers!

WizardofOs · 15/01/2013 20:21

Both of my sons' names have been mentioned. Only one is old enough for any cool grading and is he so not cool!

500internalerror · 15/01/2013 20:17

So many of these suggestions were on my short list for ds!! I love jed, Seth, Heath, loads of them - I should have had more kids Wink
