Dh and me cannot agree on a boys name. He suggested Hector last night. I'm not crazy on it but think it will grow on me as I don't dislike it either.

What do others think of it? I need a bit more conviencing.

Hector is not a noun and I don't think you can use the phrase, 'A Hector is a bully.' TO hector is TO bully, but so what? It's a v traditional name and it sounds and looks good imho. It's a lovely name.

Or Horace - I think Horace is due a revival. Or Terence. Or Atticus. Or Julian.

I'm not keen on Hector, mainly because of the unfortunate meaning. A hector is a bully/tormentor, so not a great name for your lovely son.

(I had not realised that to harry means to plunder and doubt many do.. is there a noun form i.e. a harry?)

Awful meaning, sorry. I guess in french it might be fine as 'hectorer' probably has no meaning in French Smile.

sabinel · 17/01/2013 14:16

My son's name is Hector (but we are French, not British and it is not very common in France either). It is well understood everywhere, people remember it and usually comment positively on it. We chose it while thinking about the composer Berlioz and for all the positive qualities of the Greek hero (honest, faithful, etc....).

we are also considering Hector and according to my baby names book it means to "hold fast" which isn't a bad meaning! Not sure what it would be shortened to other than Hec?

Pixieonthemoor · 16/01/2013 17:29

LOVE Hector!!

Sasparillo · 16/01/2013 15:17

Hector Heathcoat! Anyone remember that? I do t really like it to be Honest, Harry is popular because it's a lot nicer. Go with Harry xx

shoobidoo · 16/01/2013 14:39

I could never call a child a name that means bully/tormentor. How could you justify that to him as he grows up...?

monica77798 · 16/01/2013 14:18

I don't like it. As others have said, it will be a name that will evoke the same reactions as marmite - either love or hate. Which category would your son fall into? I think it sounds very old fashioned and, to be honest, just reminds me of the Columbian guy with the chain saw in Scarface.

NAR4 · 16/01/2013 13:48

Lebkuchenlover that has put me right off. Glad to know now though before we decided to name our baby it.

Need to come up with another name now though. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and any new name suggestions welcome.

I really like it and it was on our list for dc2, and I can remember Hector's House too Smile. I also like the First of the Gang to Die by Morrissey....

absentmindeddooooodles · 16/01/2013 12:19

i love the name! would have happily named my son hector.....but dp was not a fan :( ended up being jude instead

evamummy · 16/01/2013 12:14

I think the meaning is so obviously negative (as 'to hector' is used fairly frequently) that it will put many off. I personally couldn't do it to my son.

Autumn12 · 16/01/2013 12:00

I think its a cool name but it is very 'marmite', it will evoke strong reactions I think.

Frikadellen · 16/01/2013 11:50

I love the name Hector always had wanted it for DS but dh said no

DianaPrince3 · 16/01/2013 11:49

LOVE it!Smile

laptopcomputer · 16/01/2013 11:47

I know a Hector and like it a lot more than I thought I would. I am old enough for Hectors House (so is his mother) but that is not what I think of. He's a sweet boy, so don;t think of "hectoring"

Lebkuchenlover · 16/01/2013 11:43

The meaning would put me off, sorry. To hector means to bully, to torment and a hector is a bully/tormentor. Not a very nice meaning for your little boy imo!
