Most retro/dated name you've heard recently

I heard a woman in the park calling her little girl Madge. I haven't heard that name in years and years. I also know of a little toddler called Sheila.

Just wondering if any of you know any children with names that you thought had died out completely.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Well at least Lily Allen is sticking with her theme, Ethel and now Marnie... Hmmm. My DH offered Simon or Enid for our bump Hmm. Not keen on either tbh, going to go classic (although our girl name is on here, didn't realise it was considered retro).

FoofFighter · 10/01/2013 17:09

Lilly Allen called her new dd Marnie - reckon that'll make a comeback then?

Not sure I like it myself.

atthewelles · 10/01/2013 16:24

Not to mention Sharon, Keith and Lisa.

Just realised we also have a Nick, Michael, Julia, Emma and Gemma. And DD knows a Patricia.

Roger, Tracy and Colin must be only a heartbeat away, surely?

RedHotBagel · 10/01/2013 14:11

My friend at school (80s) was called Martha. She had the mickey ripped out of her, but there are tons of them now.
I didn't realise Alice had ever gone out of fashion (my 3-yr-old daughter is an Alice)!
There are two baby Wilfreds near us. And a Percy. These kind of names are very mainstream now, but really...
Anyone heard of a baby Norman? For sentimental reasons I wanted to give my son my grandad's name, but I just couldn't bring myself to burden him with it!

Lancelottie · 10/01/2013 13:58

DS is at school with an Alan, Robert, Simon, Ian, Claire, Sarah and Paul.

I like it. It's just like being back at my 1970s primary school.

No Louises and Gillians though.

NoGinorWine4Mu1berry · 10/01/2013 13:53

Scottish names for boys are fairly popular in Ireland. But I couldn't tell you a Scottish girls name come to think of it.

ivykaty44 · 10/01/2013 13:50

I know there is a Michael, Maggie and Paul in dd2 year 9 group. dd1 had friends called Joan, Jean and Dawn she is 20

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 10/01/2013 12:52

Bah. Sorry for double postage.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 10/01/2013 12:51

Duncan isn't an unusual name. I know several of them in their twenties and thirties. I don't see it as a name which dates really.

People have been mentioning the name Alan in Ireland. It's about true there have been hardly any Alans in England for about fifty years, but in Wales growing up I knew several Aluns. And there are still lots e.g Alun Wyn Jones the Welsh second row. Funny how these things are regional.

specialmagiclady · 10/01/2013 12:48

I met a baby called Vince the other day.

Of course I know Stans, Marthas, Rubies, Pearls, Teds, Sids, Walters, Wilfs, Alfreds, Agathas etc coming out the wazoo...

narmada · 10/01/2013 12:42

norhamgardens, try-hard. Unless they are Spanish or Greek.

NorhamGardens · 10/01/2013 12:26

Know a lower primary Theodora-Angelica - not quite sure how you'd describe that - partly retro partly?

NoGinorWine4Mu1berry · 10/01/2013 12:21

Graham and Barry! oh yuck. (sorry to anybody who is married to a graham or a barry)

isn't if funny how the difference between barry and harry is only one letter? barry is so universally hated but harry is so mainstream it is just harry, no comment.

stleger · 10/01/2013 12:18

DD2 (who is 16) has a Bree-an in school (in Cork). Cork names are retro - my kids are 16 -21, friends include two Keiths, Graham, Peter, Barry, Alison, Gillian, Karen, Claire. In primary school dd1 had 3 Adams and 2 Aarons in her class, so maybe a bit of variety is a good thing. I have an old lady name, much loves on names threads, I detest it!

NoGinorWine4Mu1berry · 10/01/2013 12:14

None of the Brians I know in Ireland were Bree-an. The only time it's pronounced Bree-an is when it's a sur name surely? like o'briain ?

But yeah, names very trad here compared with england. my children's age group, all the names like Michael, David, Andrew are still used.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/01/2013 12:09

The thing that really made me laugh was she had a brother called Peter, or should that be Doner and Pita?

Wishfulmakeupping · 10/01/2013 12:08

Donna wow Hmm Well it is unusual I suppose

JiltedJohnsJulie · 10/01/2013 12:03

Have met a baby Donna, the Mum wanted something unusual Hmm, a baby Gemma and even a baby Brian.

BreconBeBuggered · 10/01/2013 12:00

Wayne. Oooh, and a Colin. And a Derek.
Still can't get my head around the baby Derek.

TessOfTheBaublevilles · 10/01/2013 11:52

Stella (from page 4); my 3-year old daughter is Sarah and I know of a family in our village who recently named their baby daughter (born in November) Sarah too.

As of 2011, it was still a Top 100 name, but nearer to the bottom than the top these days.

Sarah and Elizabeth are the only two girl names that have been in the Top 100 every year since the lists were first produced in the late 19th century, so that makes Sarah timeless in my eyes.

The most 'retro' name I've heard used recently is Douglas.

NotGeoffVader · 10/01/2013 11:51

Evadne

msteeth · 10/01/2013 11:42

I know girls called Evelyn, Edith, Matilda, Gladys, Beryl (who is v elegant so gives style to the name); I also know a Mabel, but spelt and pronounced Maybel.

No Ethels or Thelmas yet but I'm sure they will soon return...

Boys' names still quite trad round our way (lots of Toms). Brian quite normal in Ireland, but pronounced Bree-an.

Quenelle · 10/01/2013 11:39

So are we due a new generation of babies called Gary soon?
