I heard a woman in the park calling her little girl Madge. I haven't heard that name in years and years. I also know of a little toddler called Sheila.

Just wondering if any of you know any children with names that you thought had died out completely.

My friend has a little girl called Pearl, and her sister Lois (who was called Violet until Pearl nicknamed her 'Vile'!!)

Another friend has called her little boy Stanley.

I love the old school name Grin

Bartie is sweet. I also like Renie if pronounced Reenie.

Loving this thread, it's given me a chuckle.

When I was at play group (approx 4 years ago now) a mum arrived with her lovely newborn boy called.....Bartholomew...Bart for short!

Had me humming the Simpsons theme tune all day.

Ernie - the fastest milkman in the West (Benny Hill about 1972) or Emily Bishop's husband. That really does age - yep - that one's definitely retro.

Behindthesofa · 21/01/2013 18:27

Ernie. Hmm

Jux · 21/01/2013 17:18

There was a girl at school with me called Sukey. Another called Jessica. I remember our teacher insisting that Jessica wasn't a 'real' name and it must be short for something; she wouldn't take no for an answer, even though Jessica got visibly upset, but that teacher was an unremittingly awful woman.

alemci · 21/01/2013 17:12

Showing my age but remember George and Mildred and little boy was called Tarquin.

I met a two year old little girl called Sukie at the weekend. She was gorgeou.

I suspect that there have not been parents of Harbottles since about 1700.

Snazzynewyear · 20/01/2013 21:09

Harbottle sounds like it'd be a type of insect. Apologies to any parents of Harbottles out there.

My DB's friends are debating Isambard for their soon to arrive DS!

SparklyGothKat · 20/01/2013 16:26

I have a 7 month old called Elsie. We both loved it and didn't think it was popular but reading this thread made me realise its had a comeback Grin

shrimponastick · 20/01/2013 16:20

Am surprised at Robert being classed as a retro name.

DS is a Robert, he is 15. There are a few more Roberts in his school too.

gobacktoyourplaypenbaby · 20/01/2013 16:00

Oops spelt that wrong Labootin

gobacktoyourplaypenbaby · 20/01/2013 15:58

Am having a good old chuckle at these. Favourites I've read are Brian, Barry and Horace (Hor) Brilliant Loobootins Grin

alemci · 20/01/2013 12:12

Harbottle - that is wicked.

quite like Melanie but most of them are the age you described or older.

Megsdaughter · 20/01/2013 09:33

I know a 8 month old Melanie, all the others I know are in their 30's.

narmada · 20/01/2013 09:09

Harbottle? Harbottle Shock

Jux · 20/01/2013 02:22

How retro is retro? I came across a couple of Tudor names today - Harbottle and Adolphus. if I'd had a boy, I think I would have been seriously tempted by Harbottle, which I think is rather magnificent! Grin. Once at school though, it would probably have morphed into Harvey. Luckily, I suppose, I had a girl.
