Is Bathsheba useable?

That's it really. Yes, get the King David story, naked roof-bathing and Thomas Hardy and all that.

So the question is: could a RL person carry off this name?

As other posters have said, absolutely not unless you are painfully hip and/or rilly, rilly good looking.

Sheba is like calling a baby Whiskas!

It is lovely. Absoluely lovely. But it will take some nerve to do it. For me, it is totally easy to pronounce and I'm surprised at people who find it such a no no.

"I have danced at your skittish heels, my beautiful Bathsheba for many a long mile and many a long hour..."

Lovely name. Are you going to use it?

BoerWarKids · 03/01/2013 21:41

I was going to point out Notes on a Scandal, excellent novel!

She shortens it to Sheba, which I prefer.

JingleBellaTheGymnast · 03/01/2013 21:38

Might I be so bold as to suggest Beulah?

SneezySnatcher · 03/01/2013 21:35

It reminds me of the teacher who had an affair with her student in 'Notes on a Scandal' - she was Bathsheba.

wishfulearthmum · 03/01/2013 20:28

I'm a teacher and every September the staff room is full of 'can you believe they would name their child that?', the child always has to look embarassed in front of the people who should be their new friends as they correct pronunctiation or ask for an alternative shortened version etc. You really need to consider the label they have for the rest of their life, in every situation, rather than a quirky preference you have at the moment.

I know one.

Celticlassie · 03/01/2013 17:57

God, I don't think so. Definitely too far.

Moominsarehippos · 03/01/2013 17:56

As a child christened with a 'waaay out there' name and the ugliest middle name imaginable, I would say don't do it unless you are a successful rock star/actor.

Your daughter will not thank you in years to come, after years of sniggering, 'eh???', jokes/silly comments/insults, and if she is unlucky, bullying.

comelywenchlywoo · 03/01/2013 17:22

Er I'd tread carefully if I were you. I think it's probably a no from me.

I think calling the OP silly is unfair.

My DCs have unusual names and most definitely no-no's in MN terms, but so what, I like them and my DCs like them, so who cares.

Fwiw i like Bathsheba, but you need to decide and then rock it!

Moominsarehippos · 03/01/2013 17:14

Sheba is catfood!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 03/01/2013 15:42

I know one as well, known as Sheba, but only a very little girl yet. She has a very short surname which sounds nice with it (think Day type thing, one syllable) Plus she's not in this country so probs fewer catfood associations with the shortenings.

In theory it's nice but what would you call her? Bath? Batty? Baba? Tricky.

AyeOopMoose · 03/01/2013 15:19

I know one in RL the siblings have even worse godawful names if you can believe it

a real burden for them

GetorfsaMotherfuckingMorrisMan · 03/01/2013 15:16

It is an utterly lovely name in theory, but I wouldn't saddle a child with it tbh. It is a lot to carry off.

Moominsarehippos · 03/01/2013 15:15

I cant imagine a surname that would go with it... It's a bit too 'way out there' I think.
