Is Megan dated or a classic?

Hi, I've been looking at some old threads about names DH and I like for DD and someone mentioned that Megan is a 90s name?

Do you agree? Was it in fashion a few years ago and now sounds dated. I really like it and had thought it was timeless but now am not so sure. Also do you know many Megans?

"There's only one way of spelling Megan.

The rest well, wrong." was your original post. Which was bull.

But you've back-pedalled now, so all is fine Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2012 22:28

It is wrong to me personally.

I wouldn't flip out and start telling Irish Meghanns their name was wrong. Because I'm not rude and in real life I doubt they would say "what do you think of how I spell my name".

I don't think I'm being particularly "nationalistic" either.

Greensleeves · 30/12/2012 21:23

Are you saying that the Irish variant is "wrong" then? Because if so you are talking rubbish.

What a weird thing to have a nationalistic bee in your bonnet about Confused

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2012 21:03

It is in Wales, where the name originates.

Greensleeves · 30/12/2012 21:00

No, Megan is not the only proper spelling

Meghann is also a legitimate form. Popular in Ireland.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2012 20:56

Tegan is also Welsh Smile

blueshoes · 30/12/2012 20:55

I would associate it with being an American name too. But then again, I am not from UK.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2012 20:21

delilah

How can it "sound American"? It is Welsh.

Karen2012 · 30/12/2012 18:53

I love it - not dated at all...

GW297 · 30/12/2012 18:44

Megan is a lovely name.

delilah88 · 30/12/2012 18:42

*But not as bad as Tegan!

delilah88 · 30/12/2012 18:42

Terribly dated I think, sorry! And also it sounds American.

jessjessjess · 30/12/2012 18:34

I love Megan. It's probably our first choice for a girl.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 30/12/2012 18:33

I have a Meg (who is just Meg), but also like Megan.

Pochemuchka · 30/12/2012 18:32

I don't think it's a classic but it's not awful either.
To me it's just a bit blah.

Like the nn Meg for an older girl/teenager though, I think it sounds quite 'cool' not that I'm anything of the sort!

LemonBreeland · 30/12/2012 18:16

It seems to have been a very popular name over the past few years. I know several Megans aged 4 to about 8.

Personally I think it is quite a harsh sounding name and really don't like it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2012 18:16

There's only one way of spelling Megan.

The rest well,wrong.

GalaxyDisaStar · 30/12/2012 18:13

That might have been me Blush.

I agree it is a classic in Wales.

Where I grew up, in the south west, there was a massive glut about 15 years ago. I knew a lot of Megan/Beth sibling pairs too (as in, I can think of three off the top of my head). Then, probably because everyone knew so many, it dropped off.

So, to me, it is a dated name. Not in a nasty way, just very 'of its time'. Much like I think Milly/Tilly/Grace will feel in a few years.

FunnysInLaJardin · 30/12/2012 17:19

my sister is Megan and she is coming up to 58, so classic name to me. The only other one I know is 14

RillaBlythe · 30/12/2012 17:17

It feels dated to me but in fact I only know one, a 4 year old.

JimbosJetSet · 30/12/2012 13:42

Megan was our first choice baby name for a while, but we went off it when we realised there are about 20 different ways of spelling it - would it bother you if it got spelled incorrectly a lot?

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2012 13:35

It's always been well used in Wales,I suppose that's why I see it as a classic.

Viviennemary · 30/12/2012 13:28

I wouldn't exactly call it a classic. There did seem to be clutches of Megans and then none for a while. But that's true of a lot of names.

Dramajustfollowsme · 30/12/2012 13:25

We have a Megan so I obviously love it. She is 20 months. I agree it is a classic that isn't too popular at the mo.

buzzgirly · 30/12/2012 13:22

Megan is lovely. My friends little girl is Megan, she's only 10 months.
