I'm always drawn to this name but worry its a bit 1980's. would Thomasina on the BC be better?

Tamsin is a nice name and pretty timeless.
I went to school with one, who's now about 46. The one in DDs year is 14

jessjessjess · 24/12/2012 13:33

I love it, but the Tamsins I knew all got nicknamed Tampax, so that's worth considering.

I personally love Tamsin and Tamara though.

AlexanderS · 24/12/2012 10:35

Tamsin has been steadily declining in popularity since 1996 when it was #271 in England and Wales (137 babies). In 2011 it was #692 (56 babies). Tamara has also declined in this period, going from #116 (397 babies) to #449 (94 babies). The popularity of Thomasina has remained consistently low with on average three babies being called this per year in this period.

I do like Tamsin and other names beginning with Tam, but that's mainly coz I love Tammy as a nickname.

You could just call her Tammy (#364 in 1996 (92 babies); #1665 in 2011 (17 babies)) but maybe you share my uneasiness at putting nicknames on birth certificates.

cynnerthenaughtyreindeer · 24/12/2012 09:27

I would consider Tamsin for my next dd...if I were having a fourth dd, that is!

WaspElly · 24/12/2012 09:17

Admittedly biased!
I have a delightful DD Thomasine for long/best, but known universally as Tamsin...
But then I liked Hardy's girls names, thought Eustacia and Bathsheba a bit much though ;)

MissKeithLemon · 24/12/2012 09:01

I really like Tamsin, Thomasina not so much.

I have only known one of each in my whole life I think, and both are lovely people so that makes it easy for me to think positively about the names iyswim.

The only negative (for her) was a bit of sniggering at the nickname Tammy at school by some of the more stupid boys. They grew out of it and old friends still call her Tammy now, but in work/her DH etc all call her Tams for the shortened version.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 24/12/2012 08:54

Well I am one, so probably biased, but I love having this name.

Unusual but easy to spell!

Mu1berryBush · 24/12/2012 08:50

I don't think dated is automatically bad. If you find a name that is out of fashion that you like then use it. I liked Jillian and Melanie and they were on my list. I liked that they were normal, pretty, they would have been unusual but recognised.

Tamsin I like fwiw. Thomasina I don't like whether it's in fashion right now or not.

FellatioNelson · 24/12/2012 04:48

I think Tamsin is a fairly timeless/dateless name, like Kirsten or Emma. I don't really associate it with any age group.

And it is pretty and feminine without being twee and cutesy, and not over-used. All plus points in my book.

Could someone clarify how you pronounce Thomasina for me please? I seem to remember it is not how it looks, but I can't remember how.

OkayHazel · 24/12/2012 04:38

Thomasina is gorgeous!

Instantly think of Thomasina Coverly, of Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia - my favourite.

Wonderful character straits to associate the name with!

XBenedict · 24/12/2012 03:29

Awful - but then I know an awful Tamsin! M

copyandpaste · 24/12/2012 03:20

Tamsin is alright, but easily a million times better that Thomasina, which is in my opinion kinda terrible. Pick what you want though!

Pochemuchka · 23/12/2012 22:37

I think Tamsin is lovely.

Thomasina sounds like a character Justin Fletcher would invent for one of his cbeebies shows (she could possibly already exist!)

thegreylady · 23/12/2012 22:27

Gorgeous one of my favourites :-)

PoppyWearer · 23/12/2012 22:19

I know a 5yo one and a late-30s one. Just bear in mind that some people will (as pp said) persist with Tasmin regardless, and others will shorten to Tam, whether you want this or not.

Svrider · 23/12/2012 22:14

I think it's lovely

Ohmydarlin · 23/12/2012 22:12

Thanks for the responses. Looks like it isn't as dated as I thought.

I know a 5 year old Tamsln. It's lovely!

RiaUnderTheMistletoe · 23/12/2012 19:43

The only Tamsin I know is early 20s. It's nice but I prefer Thomasina.

BlipbipMerrynHigh · 23/12/2012 19:17

once we get the miss pronunciations out of the way most people say they like the name. This is a name I know quite a lot about Xmas Smile

LittleBallOfFur · 23/12/2012 19:17

I know a 6 year old tamsin and my yoga teacher is tamsyn - lovely name either way I think :)

Floggingmolly · 23/12/2012 19:14

My dd has a friend called Tamsin, they're nearly 12. It's a nice name.

hellymelly · 23/12/2012 19:12

I don't think it is dated, I think its really pretty and well known without being too popular which is ideal really.

LynetteScavo · 23/12/2012 19:11

No, but then I know a child Tamsin.

coldcupoftea · 23/12/2012 19:11

I think it's lovely!
