My dgs is 3 and had a Christmas card from a child in his class signed 'Effie'.
I wondered what it might be short for.I can only think of Euphemia!!!Surely not...

I know you have found the answer, but it can also be Effracine (not sure of the spelling Eff-ra-cee-nee), which is a Greek name I think.

I used to know an Effie. She would be about 70 now, and it definitely wasn't short for anything.

I'd say it was the 'wrong' spelling for the Irish name Aoife. Like spelling Georgia as Jorja.

I once worked with an Effie, she was Greek and her name was Effindra (sp??) - I think it's a fab name.

Want to say I do like Amelia and Charles. But Euphemia, Archibald, Alfred are really old fashion in my mind. But I'm sure my preconception will change if there are lots of baby and toddler Alfreds around!

Many of the baby Effies, Millies, Charlies, Alfies are not actually short for anything. It's the new cutsie name trend .

My Great Grandmother was Effie short for Euphemia. She died in 1941 and was apparently a complete bitch! Never liked the name.

Yes, Effie is quite popular now - in line with the zillions of Milly, Lilly, Tilly, Evies, etc, out there. Of the same ilk.

It won't necessarily be short for anything.

My great aunt was Effie short for Euphemia. She would be about 100 now though
