My dgs is 3 and had a Christmas card from a child in his class signed 'Effie'.
I wondered what it might be short for.I can only think of Euphemia!!!Surely not...

I know you have found the answer, but it can also be Effracine (not sure of the spelling Eff-ra-cee-nee), which is a Greek name I think.

Elfriede

marriednotdead · 27/12/2012 21:25

I used to know an Effie. She would be about 70 now, and it definitely wasn't short for anything.

thegreylady · 27/12/2012 21:13

Sorry it is indeed just Effie :)

Any name starting with 'F'.

weeblueberry · 27/12/2012 00:57

Josephine. Fairly accepted nickname for it Smile

SantasBitch · 23/12/2012 11:03

Is her middle name Nell? Xmas Grin

SomersetONeil · 23/12/2012 02:35

But Jorja (ridiculous as it is) does sound like Georgia.

Effie (eh-fee) doesn't sound like Aoife (ee-fa)...

flowerygirl · 22/12/2012 10:09

I'd say it was the 'wrong' spelling for the Irish name Aoife. Like spelling Georgia as Jorja.

I once worked with an Effie, she was Greek and her name was Effindra (sp??) - I think it's a fab name.

MissVerinder · 20/12/2012 14:33

Eleftheria?

Bakingtins · 20/12/2012 14:26

Persephone? I've only met one Effie and hers wasn't short for anything.

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 20/12/2012 11:55

Want to say I do like Amelia and Charles. But Euphemia, Archibald, Alfred are really old fashion in my mind. But I'm sure my preconception will change if there are lots of baby and toddler Alfreds around!

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 20/12/2012 11:54

Many of the baby Effies, Millies, Charlies, Alfies are not actually short for anything. It's the new cutsie name trend Grin.

Alisvolatpropiis · 20/12/2012 11:52

It can be short for Elizabeth,as well as the more eyebrow raising Euphemia.

fedupwithdeployment · 20/12/2012 11:44

My Great Grandmother was Effie short for Euphemia. She died in 1941 and was apparently a complete bitch! Never liked the name.

BlueChampagne · 20/12/2012 11:32

as in "Silas Marner"?

thegreylady · 20/12/2012 09:33

I asked-her name is just Effie!

poppydaisy · 19/12/2012 14:39

I'd think Effie would be short for either Euphemia or Seraphina?

shoobidoo · 18/12/2012 22:31

I know one who is short for Euphemia. I like it. Lovely meaning too. What's not to like Confused?

OneLittleToddlingTerror · 18/12/2012 22:15

I'm sure it's not short anything either. There's one at DDs nursery.

SomersetONeil · 18/12/2012 22:10

Yes, Effie is quite popular now - in line with the zillions of Milly, Lilly, Tilly, Evies, etc, out there. Of the same ilk.

It won't necessarily be short for anything.

Overdecorated · 18/12/2012 22:07

My great aunt was Effie short for Euphemia. She would be about 100 now though

VickyU · 18/12/2012 21:42

I have a friend with a 3 year old called Effie. It's just Effie. Not short for anything!
