Moriarty?

I think it's a fabulous name.

But, like Tiddles, it belongs on a cat.

StormyWeek · 18/12/2012 18:59

But Murray is a Scottish name, and of all the brilliant Scottish names to chose from- Angus, Fraser, Callum, Cameron, Malachy, and my all time favourite, Hamish, Murray is a Deeply unsexy name. IMO.

BackforGood · 18/12/2012 18:54

I'd assume his parents were massive fans of CATS, and had let pregnancy hormones get the better of them.

TheMonster · 18/12/2012 18:53

No! Poor kid.

AKissIsNotAContract · 18/12/2012 18:51

I like it. I think you should go for it.

worsestershiresauce · 18/12/2012 18:50

I'd think his school days would be hell. Just don't. Cruel.

DinosaursOnAnAdventCalender · 18/12/2012 18:50

It is an Irish name and would be shortened to Murray. Exp has been championing Murray for a while now and its not grabbed me but he's used his brain and appealed to the Sherlock fan in me and said Moriarty would be a good full name with Murray as a nickname.

Moriarty could be a solicitor or an something else powerful, I am quite taken with it.

Although I do agree it would suit a pet too Blush

My first thought is "there's a beautiful bridge Moriarty!" Followed by "negative waves Moriarty!"

Moriarty is Donald sutherlands side kick in Kelly's Heroes - one of my all time favourite films :)

Wot she ^^ said

ThinkAboutItOnBoxingDay · 18/12/2012 18:43

That his mum hadn't consulted the wisdom of mumsnet and taken notice of it.

Good name but inevitably poncy.

MaggieMaggieMaggieMcGill · 18/12/2012 18:41

It's the hormones messing with your head, don't let them win!

Vagaceratops · 18/12/2012 18:41

Could you use it as a middle name?

MulledPinot · 18/12/2012 18:41

*thought

dammit

sweetkitty · 18/12/2012 18:41

Great name for a dog or cat sorry

MulledPinot · 18/12/2012 18:40

I think sometimes people fall in love with words - and that's wonderful and has been around for ever (Shakespeare etc famously created words as he loved language so much).

But you have to be careful that your love of words doesn't mean your child ends up with a hindrance of a name. They may be shy, they may be introvert - it's a big ask for a child to have to 'live up' to a huge name.

I hope that makes sense. I'm all for doing what you want, but with careful though, that's all.

StormyWeek · 18/12/2012 18:39

Sorry, but another no from me. It's an Irish surname, I think mainly from Co. Cork. All Irish people would think it odd, and I wonder if it would be shortened to Murray ( which I hate). I would think Sherlock first, and faux whacky second.
Sorry!

Doshusallie · 18/12/2012 18:39

would immediately think of the bonkers game in One Day played by the awful posh family referenced up thread "Are you there Moriaty?"

MulledPinot · 18/12/2012 18:38

Oh please don't.

Get a cat and call it that, but not a child.

Viviennemary · 18/12/2012 18:37

I'd think oh a name worse than Ptolemy.

akaemmafrost · 18/12/2012 18:35

It's a fab dog name! That's my next terriers name.

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 18/12/2012 18:33

Fabulous rabbit or cat name, bonkers for humans.

onedev · 18/12/2012 18:32

I quite like it but would think the parents a bit cookie Grin

CashmereHoodlum · 18/12/2012 18:32

Are you there, Moriarty?

HipposGoBerserk · 18/12/2012 18:30

I would hope he never had to leave North London.

MaryBS · 18/12/2012 18:28

Bonkers mental (as Al Murray would say). Sorry!
