Hi,
This is one of our top names atm (we're ignoring the Kaiser Chiefs song) but can you tell me impressions of it please? Is it chavvy, is it too popular etc? I know it was very popular a few years ago but not sure amongst babies born recently.

I have a Ruby, we call her Rubes mostly.

She is 6 and in a large 4 form entry primary but there are only two of them in her year.

I was worried that there would be more i didn't realise until after we named them how popular it was.

I love it.

Hmm.....I think it would be hard to imagine an adult "Ruby". It is very popular at the moment though so clearly a lot of people really like this name.

Of your other choices, I like Caitlin.

Lots of Rubys (or should that be Rubies?) so quite a trendy which may start to sound dated as it falls out of favour again.

I'm not keen on cutesy names like Evie, Ellie, Ruby, Molly, Lolly etc. but of course itis your baby and YOU'VE got to love it!

Lots and lots of Ruby's in my local schools where I am a supply teacher. It's one of my favourite names, if I had been blessed with a daughter it was on my short list. Haven't come across a Ruby yet who wasn't delightful,however none of them seem to know that their name is a colour and a precious stone. That's infant age though.

The dated thing was why I was a bit worried about it being popular; the same thing has happened with my name which was very popular in the mid 80s. We've only got a couple if other names but they are completely different; Caitlin and Ella (which I know is popular as well).
It's so difficult!!

It is quite popular. My daughter is 4 and has two friends called. Ruby. Also two of my friends have daughters called Ruby- aged 3 and 4. I used to like it after watching Cutting It Smile

I like it, but it was very popular a few years ago- less so now I think. My DDs are 4 and 2 and I don't think I've ever come across a little Ruby!

It is extremely popular. I think it was no. 2 on the girls list in 2010 or 2011.

I gave the name to my dd in January 2001 when it was still quite unusual. It has become popular because it is a beautiful name.

It is on our list too (due in just under 3 wks) along with Scarlett. We love both but cant decide which one we like the best (prob end up with neither!!).

The thing putting me off Ruby is that a lot of people say they know dogs called Ruby - in fact an old work mate of mine does have a dog called Ruby! But I think there are enough human Rubys around to make it ok to choose!

I have been teaching for about 9 years and only ever come across 2 Rubys and 2 Scarletts. I work with young children too so I would have expected to see a lot more of them. I don't know where they all live but its not in Yorkshire!

Do you have any other names yet or just Ruby. I think it will age well i.e. I could imagine a grandma Ruby! not sure Scarlett work that well?

OK, I'm going to be honest, since you're asking for opinions. Ruby is nice enough but then I've never really understood why it was so popular. To my mind, it is already sounding dated, just because it was so popular.
