Ever met one? It can be a girl's name apparently

I am searching for DD2's name, but this is an idle thread for curiosity's sake I must confess...

See, I think shortening to Trist would mean sad in French (triste) - not a great association imo.

No

Yes I'd forgotten about Tristane, Shoobidoo, which is quite a nice name but I'm sure works better in France - or at least with a French accent. As opposed to getting Triss-stain....

I like it, but I would spell it with an 'I' purely because being nicknamed Tryst would illicit so many jokes.

NotChristmasCarol · 16/12/2012 15:29

Cote, there are a variety of spellings and it is both a girl's and a boy's name (as you will see from the link) although obviously "Tristan" is a relatively commonly boy's name - hence the question

In France Tristane is a fairly commone girls name. But Tristan/Trystan, with the emphasis on the first syllable, sounds male to me.

VBisme · 16/12/2012 15:22

I've only ever heard of it as a boys name. (And Isolde is a lovely girls name that it always reminds me of).

CoteDAzur · 16/12/2012 15:22

Tristan (note the spelling) is a boys' name.

pixiestix · 16/12/2012 15:21

No, I've only ever come across it for a boy. I would probably pull a Confused face if I met a female Trystan tbh.
