What think you of the name Effie (or spelt Effy?)

Love it. Surely could also be shift for any name beginning with F?

TaperJeanGirl · 06/12/2012 23:34

My baby is Effie, not short for anything, and we arent Greek, I DO know a middle aged south African and she still sniggers at dds name Grin

MoaningMingeWhimpersAgain · 06/12/2012 23:03

I went to school with an Effie - no ideal if it was her given name or not, but she used to say it was short for 'little fucker' Grin She was a good laugh and it suited her though.

lynzie68 · 06/12/2012 23:00

Sorry but effie makes me think of effies/effergin weight loss tablets.

Fifi2406 · 05/12/2012 09:04

I had a huge doll called Effie when I was a little girl she was called that because she was really heavy and I couldn't say heavy! It stuck! I think it's cute because of that I'd probably use it as a nickname though!

MrRected · 05/12/2012 02:20

I grew up in South Africa. Years ago, condoms used to be called French Letters or Effies for short. Sorry but I can't get away from that.

You probably won't encounter many middle aged South Africans, so you should be ok.

OkayHazel · 05/12/2012 02:02

I occasionally use it, as my first name is an F and my middle name E.

Parents would call me FE (surname) in a jokey way and the FE became Effie.

rezzle · 30/11/2012 22:39

I really like it as a nickname for Stephanie, but I think that some might find that a bit dated.

VisualiseAHorse · 30/11/2012 22:37

Love it.

Short for Euphemia. U-fee-mi-a. Scottish name.

LDNmummy · 30/11/2012 22:35

This is the abbreviation to my DD's middle name and I love it.

Hers is a foreign name and I didn't pick it as it was down to custom but I still love it.

I actually prefer the abbreviated version to the actual version which is great because its what all the grandparents call her.

GW297 · 30/11/2012 22:33

Eefie?

msrisotto · 30/11/2012 22:32

When I saw the thread title, I thought of "eff off".

mewkins · 30/11/2012 22:30

Yep Effie in Skins was short for Elizabeth. I have known two Effies, both Greek and short for Efrosini which is apparently a very popular name in Greece and a very popular shortening.

Mintyy · 30/11/2012 22:30

I'm afraid its not my cup of tea. I generally only post on the baby names thread if I have something positive to say, so I'm sorry about that. It makes me think of someone ineffectual for some reason.

Iris1 · 30/11/2012 22:28

I think its good as nn for Elizabeth. Not quite the same but I absolutely love Elfie for a girl nn for Eleanor. Bit softer than Effy but very similar.

fatzak · 30/11/2012 22:28

Can also be short for Eleftheria or Efthalia I think? Quite a common name in Greece.

EmpressOfTheNorthPole · 30/11/2012 22:20

I'm sorry but I'm with Puffpants, it reminds me of effing.

If it's short for Elizabeth she's got something to fall back on.

PointyDogs · 30/11/2012 22:17

Before DD was born I had a dream that told me I had to name her Iphigenia, Effy for short. Strangely, I didn't do as the dream suggested...

GalaxyDisaster · 30/11/2012 21:30

The Effie in Skins was Elizabeth wasn't she?

I once met a girl who was known as Effie. I think her full name was something like Effracine (it was said Eff-ra-cee-nee - never knew her well enough to see how you spelled it).

eff-emmia even?

VivaLeBeaver · 30/11/2012 19:25

How's it pronounced - Eff-eema?

Astralabe · 30/11/2012 19:17

Its short for Euphemia. There was a character called Effie in the series of Skins before last who was quite cool, and I thought it was nice then - but definitely sounds like a shortened version of something and I'm not sure about Euphemia.

VivaLeBeaver · 30/11/2012 19:08

I know an Effie at work I also had a great aunt Effie, which must have been short for something but not sure what.
