Just that, really...I know how I would want it pronounced, but I don't want to condemn dd to a lifetime of "actually, it's pronounced..." if my pronunciation isn't the most obvious one. So could you roughly phonetically spell the first pronunciation that comes to mind, please, kind mumsnetters?

I also know an English one pronounced 'Loosha'. I quite like it - sounds like a 'clean' name to me!

squareheadcut · 29/11/2012 11:00

Like st lucia loosha

ZZZenAgain · 29/11/2012 10:54

I would pronounce it Italian style - LouCHEEah, unless I was told otherwise

MarianForrester · 29/11/2012 10:50

Loo chee a

badtime · 29/11/2012 10:50

Because no-one has mentioned it yet, I feel I should point out that there is also the eastern European pronunciation, 'Loot-see-a'.

TheHumancatapult · 29/11/2012 05:00

Loo-chee--ah

If going for the Italian version bit expect spend life saying no H and no it's not pronounced looci ah

Out of 4dc . Three have to tell people either how to spell their name and how to say it

The 4th dc most get right though occasionally people try to use English version

Ds1,ds2( Italian names ) dd name is Arabic and spelt that way not the made up version . Ds3 name is Irish and very few ever get it less they are Irish

In Sweden it is pronounced Lucy-ya.

ZenNudist · 28/11/2012 22:42

Loosha

MissCellania · 28/11/2012 22:38

It's just Italian, but technically it comes from the Florentine dialect. Regional dialects were spoken more than Italian right up until the 1950's.

The language you speak, the national language is there a name for it? Sorry to go off thread but it would really help me no end. It is so confusing and hoping to begin learning soon.

MissCellania · 28/11/2012 21:51

It's not contradictory. Dialects are old, separate languages that have varying relations to modern Italian, but there is only one accepted national language, which was adopted just over a century ago.

Of course there are various international versions, I'm only commenting on the language I speak!

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 28/11/2012 20:51

The different pronunciations are national not just Italian, Luchia is Italian Luthia lusha luceea are all Spanish variations there is also a Netherlands version but not sure of the pronunciation I think that too is luceea. I researched well before naming my dd Grin

ATourchOfInsanity · 28/11/2012 20:38

Lucy-ah

tittytittyhanghang · 28/11/2012 20:37

loo-she-a, probably sounds a lot nicer with an italian or a french accent :) rather than my thick scottish one.

CarlingBlackMabel · 28/11/2012 20:33

"The thing about Italian is there is only one way to pronounce each letter/sound. It's a very simple language, much more than English. There are lots of dialects though with different pronounciations that you may have heard. "

That sounds extremely contradictory Confused

The woman I know called Loo-sha has Italian parents...

CarlingBlackMabel · 28/11/2012 20:29

I would say Loo-sher, having met someone with that name.
Before I would have said Loo-chee-er based on the TV series.

Both lovely.

Bagofspiders · 28/11/2012 20:27

Lucy a

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/11/2012 20:25

Loo-chee-ah.

FernandoIsFaster · 28/11/2012 19:20

My friend pronounces her dd's name as loo-sha.

When I see it written though I think lu-cee-a.

MissCellania · 28/11/2012 19:03

morethanpotatoprints · 28/11/2012 18:19

MissCellania.

I have heard 3 or even 4 ways Santa Lucia has been pronounced, from Opera singers to kids choirs all different. Not saying your wrong, just find it funny.
I think my dd sang Loocheea and loochica in some parts, lol.

Runoutofideas · 28/11/2012 18:09

My dd2 has 2 friends names Lucia. One pronounces it Loo-chee-a, the other one is Loo-Sha.

People generally find out people's names from other people telling them, rather than from being written down, so I would pronounce it how you like and not worry about it! Lovely name either way!
