A truly beautiful name. It's DD's middle name. I wanted it as a first name but our surname starts with an S and they 'ran together' too much.

I like Lissy as a nickname.

milktraylady · 29/11/2012 19:08

My sister is an Alice, we called her Lally for short. and my mum also called her bubs, short for beelzebubs. But my mum is a bit odd!

alemci · 29/11/2012 18:57

My Alice gets called Alan at times by silly friends and Ali but it is a great name. Alison sounds dated somehow.

When we named her Adam Faith and Zoe Wanamaker were in a drama with a baby called Alice but all around the same time - early 90's, wasn't as popular then I don't think

Go Alice Go boom boom - HRH008

Also Alice Aligator - all our animal friends (filling up now)

LittleDonkin · 29/11/2012 18:44

I have known an Alice who's nickname was Cece

HRH008 · 28/11/2012 07:40

I have fun at Oktoberfest though (live in Munich) where you get thousands of people in a tent singing "Who the fuck is Alice?" and our table gets up and shouts "SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE´S Alice" Grin

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 18:23

Wow! Mainly nice, positive responses! Thankyou! My daughter has a nickname that is nothing like/from her actual name-so I am aware that nicknames do tend to happen rather than are a planned thing!

Dd is alice and we call her Ali, or alligator when she's being a grump, like now

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 18:10

HRH008 you're supposed to be helping and telling me how lovely the name is, not telling me how much you hate Alice the camel!

recall you're not helping either!

Living next door to Alice ....Alice ......

HRH008 · 26/11/2012 17:59

I admit to still hating "Alice the camel".

I´m almost over it (aged 40) Grin

EssieW · 26/11/2012 17:51

Our Alice is known only as Alice but as she's only three, then there's time for this to change. I chose it because there isn't an obvious shortened version.

Did wonder about Lissie as a possible nickname. She's having none of it.

insancerre · 26/11/2012 17:39

My Alice is called Ali Bongo from Bingo land. Or AliBongo for short.
When she was little she used to call herself Arses Grin

IWipeArses · 26/11/2012 17:34

Lal

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 17:24

Ah, my sister lives quite close to Alice's bear shop and my niece has a couple of the bears/books signed by Rikey, but I didn't think of it at all! That's not a bad association anyway! They're lovely and maybe a good present for my sister to buy the baby if it's a girl!

Thanks

NoTea, don't worry about any associations, most names have them to some point. We had a few comments from FIN and BIL's when we named our Dd but they don't say anything now. No one else has.

My Alice received a beautifully illustrated Alice in Wonderland book as a Christening gift, I thought that it was lovely.

The only downside of her name (to me anyway) is that it is apparently about number 37 in popularity.

The Bear thing is not routinely associated with the name, just a personal thing, although if you Google Alice Bears they are very lovely.

bellamysbride · 26/11/2012 16:44

Grumpy pants or Ali palais!

reastie · 26/11/2012 16:39

DD is an ALice and I either lengthen it to ALice pops or else shorten it to Al.

greensnail · 26/11/2012 16:37

My alice gets Ally Bally Bee or just Ally Bally in the family. Other people don't shorten it at all.

It's also is quite different and more formal than my other daughter's name but I still feel like they go well together and really suit their very different personalities.

Frikadellen · 26/11/2012 16:34

I know a Alice who is called allall no clue why.. the other Alice (I know) is called Alice.

Pretty name

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 16:31

'Who the Fuck is Alice' and 'Alice the camel' are concerns to be honest!

Alice in Wonderland doesn't bother me, it's not like she's horrible is it!

The Alison thing does happen, mostly abroad though (but as I am living abroad it happens all the bloody time!)

You get a bit fed up of the Alice in Wonderland jokes and the "Who the fuck is Alice" stuff but on the other hand, it´s classic, very pretty but not too flowery and just unusual enough. As I said, I´ve always loved it.

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 16:19

Am I missing something chocolate ?!

OP posts:
chocolateicecream · 26/11/2012 16:11

Bear
Growly Bear
Grizzly Bear
Boo Bear

Frontpaw · 26/11/2012 15:14

More likely to be Ally or AllyPally.

The problem with nicknames is that you never quite know where they will go. Mine is nothing like my real name, but add one sister who couldn't get her mouth around the real name or the shortened version, and voila!

NoTeaForMe · 26/11/2012 15:10

I'd hate it to be lengthened to Alison...I love Alice and loathe Alison - is that likely?!
