Pronounced Arr-yah. If you heard of someone calling their child this name, would you make any assumptions about what her parents were like/ what job they did?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
bigkidsdidit · 24/11/2012 15:54

I'd think white supremacist too

I've never heard of Game of Thrones before this thread though

ISeeThreadPeople · 24/11/2012 15:49

Somebody dh went to school with has just named his dd....

khaleesi

Arya is infinitely preferable.

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/11/2012 15:42

I'm surprised at the Neo-nazi comments. Even when reading the books on first go,I didn't make that connection. I'm by no means unfamiliar with the word Aryan either.

I couldn't say what I thought Arya's did,I have no set idea. I suppose I would assume some level of Game of Thrones awareness or they were Indian.

I know someone who named her daughter Arya earlier this year. As far as I know, nobody has suggested she is a Neo-Nazi for doing so.

HTH

12ylnon · 24/11/2012 13:27

I think the point is that most people will hear the name, not read it. Or they'll hear it when writing it down.
It's not a popular neo-Nazi name, like Loki or Thor or something. It's a common name in India.

I'm not bothered really, anyone who knows us knows we're about as far away from a nazi as you can get.

IHeartKingThistle · 24/11/2012 11:57

12ylnon it is the same spelling though. Given that so many people on this thread have associated the name with neo-Nazis, it would definitely put me off!

AitchDee · 24/11/2012 10:03

You win the prize for most ridiculous thread title ever on Mumsnet. It even exceeds the 'what is the brother of xxxxx called?'.

Frontpaw · 24/11/2012 10:00

I also know of a Negar... Prononced, oh dear, just too close to another N word. In the US.

Frontpaw · 24/11/2012 09:59

Persians are an arian (sp??). I know two little Arians (boys), so that is a real name. Not sure how well that goes down in the UK/US. Can you imagine sports day 'faster Arian, Faster, higher, better - beat them all Ariannnnn!'

But then I also know a Fatima, nn Fatty or Fahr-ti (oh dear, I did try to warn them before they went on holiday) 'come here Fatty, Farty come heeeere!'

OwedToAutumn · 24/11/2012 08:08

I didn't call either DD Pheobe, because of Friends. It was my favourite ever name, from the time I was about 8 or 9 when I read Eight Cousins.

If I introduced a DD to you as Pheobe, now, you would be unlikely to think of Friends.

If you love the name, use it, and ignore everyone else.

(I have never watched Game of Thrones.)

12ylnon · 24/11/2012 08:02

I'm a childminder and my OH works in insurance btw.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 24/11/2012 08:01

I thought neo nazi but I know nothing about Game of Thrones.

12ylnon · 24/11/2012 08:00

Well We're not neo-nazis (aryan is pronounced air-ee-an, not sure how people are making that connection) and we think homeopathy is a load of balls.
DC will be called Arya if she's a girl. We might like a song of ice and fire a bit though.... Alright, perhaps a lot.

sashh · 24/11/2012 03:41

Dad is dead for suggesting jofrey is not the king. Mum is with older brother creating and leading armies and doing deals with Walter Frey that she cannot keep to.

Her uncle is about to die, her sister is about to be kidnapped and ............................

Not wanting to do too many spoilers

forevergreek · 23/11/2012 22:19

I prefer Aria

Rhubarbgarden · 23/11/2012 20:58

Neo nazis

3b1g · 23/11/2012 20:33

The father would be called Ned (short for Eddard) and would be the Lord of a castle in the North. The mother would be called Catelyn.
Arya is a strong character and a good role model though.

PropositionJoe · 23/11/2012 20:30

Oh yes - and I'd think it was a boy

PropositionJoe · 23/11/2012 20:29

Haven't read the thread. I would pronounce it A-ree-yah if I hadn't been told. The parents would be Indian doctors.

mercibucket · 23/11/2012 20:20

I think most of us are thinking along those lines, mamattoo: either neo-nazi ('recent history as you call it)or hippy (you do know it means noble, truthful, great .. Yes? Said while waving incense and wearing crystals)
There is also the 'foreign' option. Like bonsoir, the only people I know with similar names are from Iran

MaMattoo · 23/11/2012 19:53

You do know that the word means noble, truthful, great...yes?
What hitler and co did to the name and its meaning is recent history.
The god who is worshipped on Diwali is called 'arya-putra' or son of the noble one.

The arya I know is the son of a development economist and social scientist.

Bonsoir · 23/11/2012 19:46

Oh, and both Arya's parents are from the Iranian diaspora.

Bonsoir · 23/11/2012 19:46

Oh, there is an Arya in my DD's year at school in Paris. His father is a professor of mathematics (at Columbia) and his mother is a graphic designer.

mamalovesmojitos · 23/11/2012 19:45

Thanks BOF, just spluttered a glass of red over my phone! My thoughts exactly.

YummyHoney · 23/11/2012 19:43

Nothing of any value to society .
