What's Your Name?

manicinsomniac · 22/11/2012 17:48

We've done mother's, father's, grandmother's, grandfather's, children's names. But I don't think I've seen an inspiration thread based on our own (maybe we don't like our own generation's names!)

Thought it might be interesting though. For those who want to share.

Also, how common was your name when you were born? And do you like it?

I'm a Rebecca. I think it was in the top 5. Certainly top 10. I was frequently in situations where we had to decide who was going to be Rebecca, Becca, Becky, Bex etc just to distinguish. I still really like it though. But I don't like Becky and am not that sold on Becca and Bex either.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
javotte · 28/11/2012 14:03

Amelie.
I don't really like it.

ToManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 28/11/2012 11:53

I'm Hayley, quite like it, don't think it has aged too much.

spottywelly · 28/11/2012 10:37

Katherine. Presumably because I had a 10-letter surname and 9-letter middle name, and my parents were trying for a record.

I quite like it, other than the length (never fits on any forms!). There seemed to be a lot of Katherines born in the late 70s/early 80s, but most of them went by a shortened form, and I never did, so that was different enough for me.

No one ever spells it the right way, though! They always ask 'with a C or a K?', but when I say K, they normally assume it's Kathryn.

LaTrucha · 28/11/2012 09:51

I like Tess too. nearly called DD it but her Spanish family would not have understood at all.

LaTrucha · 28/11/2012 09:50

Susanna / Susie - I do like it. I did upset my Dad, who named me, terribly one day when I said 'Susie' was the kind of name you give a labrador but I don't think that any more. My middle name is Maria, after Sarah Vaughan singing the West Side Story song.

My mum wanted to call me Chloe or Candace. I would have liked Chloe and it might have suited me more. I'm glad I'm not Candace.

TessOfTheBaublevilles · 28/11/2012 09:47

Oh and I really like my name.

I was so called name, as Tess of the d'Urbervilles is my mum's favourite book.

Like good old Tess in the book, I had a child in my late teens, but thankfully that's the only life event we have shared!

TessOfTheBaublevilles · 28/11/2012 09:43

Tess - not short for anything - just Tess.

Abcinthia · 28/11/2012 07:46

Katie. It's not short for anything.

I really like my name and have not met many other Katies. Met a few Katherines but they usually shortened their name to Kat/Kathy.

rosiesmartypants · 27/11/2012 22:20

Winifred Biscuit, called after my mum and great aunt....however my sisters very quickly started using my middle name Rose, as it just wasn't cool to have a baby sister Winifred....thank God some people in the family had sense!

I must admit though....it comes in handy if I am ever trying to pretend to be posh polishing tiara he he he Grin

baskingseals · 27/11/2012 22:05

Cezella · 25/11/2012 16:57

I'm a Ceri (Welsh form of Kerry)

I like it, it means love although a lot of English people I meet say "Seri"

Not popular by any means, but I know of plenty of others here in Wales

buttercrumble · 25/11/2012 14:59

Catherine, hated it as a child but have grown to love it.......

manicinsomniac · 25/11/2012 14:59
  • 'was right' should have been in the middle of that last sentence!

I kind of think this thread helps the argument that we really don't need to worry about name popularity.

Most of us are of the generation where Sarahs, Lauras, Emmas, Rebeccas, Claires, Nicolas, Gemmas and Michelles seemed to be everywhere but most of these names have only come up once, maximum twice.

And I think whoever said that the really popular names now are less popular than the really popular names of the 80s - people have branched out.

I'm Carrie but Caroline at job interviews and when complaining about shoddy service. I liked it more before Sex And The City came along.

HaggisMcNeeps · 25/11/2012 14:44

My name is Haggis. Obvs.

SoYo · 25/11/2012 14:22

Siobhan. Nobody can spell it and. I got called sigh-oh-Bon at school but it never put me off loving it! Always enjoyed having a name that was a but different. Although saying that there was another in my year (That's Catholic schooling for you!).

My 'Sunday' name is Kathleenann.

As a small child my mother made a point of telling me repeatedly that my name was Kathleenann not Kathleen, as people tended to shorten it.

I love my name but a lot of people (especially healthcare professionals for some reason Angry) tend to see my name on the top of the notes they are holding and still call out Kathleen. It's a right bugbear of mine, so......

......I've shortened it to Kat and that's how most people know me. I do much prefer Kathleenann though Grin.

Dillydollydaydream · 25/11/2012 10:40

Another Michelle. Was one of about 6 at school! Very imaginative parents. Also hate being called meesh or meeshell!

greenandcabbagelooking · 25/11/2012 09:36

Elizabeth. Only ever met one my own age. I don't mind it, but I do shorten it, because I've got a long middle name and surname.

I like it because it's common enough that people have heard it, can spell it and say it, but not so common that I've been Elizabeth A in school.
